Cassette Controls and Operation


The following features and controls arc available when using the tape player.


Cartridge Insertion and Play


The cassette player can be operated whenever ignition voltage is present and the radio power switch is On. The clock will be displayed during tape operation.


When a tape is inserted while the radio or optional remote CD changer is playing, the previous mode will be suspended. and the tape player will be automatically selected. The system will enter tape play mode. The cassette icon and the appropriate track arrow will be displayed to indicate that a tape is in the unit and playing.


The radio preset buttons will change function upon the insertion of a tape, as identified by the alternate legends. After initial use, the cassette will be played on the same side used prior to the last ejection. The track arrow indicates whether the top or bottom track is being played.


When the tape player is operating, the MTL, Dolby(R), RPT and CLEAN indicators become available and appear in the display if the corresponding feature is active.


When the power switch or ignition are turned Off during tape operation. the tape will stop and the head and pinch rollers will retract to protect the tape. The tape will remain in the player, and tape playing will resume when power is reapplied if the tape has not been ejected by the user.


When a cassette is ejected, radio operation will resume.


The cassette player employs motorized tape loading. A tape can not be loaded when the ignition or power switch is Off.

Tape - TAPE Button


Pushing the TAPE button will have no action when the tape is playing. To change modes press either the AM/FM button or the AX button. The cassette icon annunciator will remain displayed to indicate that the tape is in the player. but stopped. Once in radio mode. pressing the TAPE button will cause the system to switch back from radio mode and resume playing the tape. Once in CD mode. pressing the TAPE button will cause the system to switch from CD mode and resume playing the tape.


Pressing the TAPE button will return the tape mechanism to the play mode from the fast forward, reverse, next search and previous search modes.


Program (arrow up/arrow down) Button


The program push button (arrow up/arrow down) is a momentary contact control that serves only as a function of the tape player. Depressing this control in any tape mode (fast forward, reverse. next, previous, repeat or play) reverses the tape deck play direction and begins to play the other side from the existing tape position. When the end of the current side is encountered, the auto-reverse feature will automatically reverse the play direction and play will be resumed in the new direction.


EJECT Button


The (arrow up) EJECT button is a momentary contact switch. It is used to eject a tape cassette. After the tape is ejected, the system will return to radio mode. The eject button will be available to eject a cassette when the power switch and/or ignition are Off.


Fast Forward and Reverse - FWD and REV Buttons


Fast forward and reverse modes are activated by pressing the FWD or REV buttons respectively (alternating functions of preset buttons 4 and 6). The tape will be shuttled at fast speed to the appropriate end of the tape.


Pressing the FWD button will fast forward the tape in the direction of play. Without further input. the tape will be moved to the end of the current side and the play direction will be reversed. FWD is cancelled. and play will resume in the new direction.


Pressing the REV button will cause the tape to be rewound in the direction opposite to the play direction. Without further input, the tape will be moved to the beginning of the current side. When the beginning of the side is reached, reverse is cancelled. and play will resume in the current direction.


Reverse and fast forward can be cancelled by the user by pressing the same button a second time. Tape shuttling is also cancelled by pressing the PROG or TAPE buttons.


Both functions are cancelled by exiting tape mode or by selecting PREV, NEXT, or the opposite shuttle mode.


Reverse and Fast forward modes are cancelled and play resumes after cycling the power switch or ignition switch.

Radio Monitor - RDM Button


The radio monitor feature enables the user to listen to the tuner audio while fast forwarding or reversing a cassette tape.


During radio monitor modes, the following tuner functions are available during reverse and fast forward:

(left arrow) SEEK, SEEK (right arrow), (left arrow) TUNE, TUNE (right arrow), (left arrow) SCAN (right arrow). The six station preset buttons retain their tape mode functions.


The radio monitor feature may be switched On and Off by pressing the RDM button during the tape fast forward or reverse operation only. During radio monitor mode, the frequency is displayed continuously, and the "RDM" display annunciator is not used to identify radio monitor operation to avoid any potential confusion with the CD random feature. Pressing and releasing RCL will cause display to show clock for five seconds and then revert to frequency. The On/Off status of the radio monitor feature is maintained in memory until changed again by the user or batten power is interrupted.


Music Search - PREV and NEXT Buttons


Previous and next music search are activated by pressing the buttons identified by PREV and NEXT respectively (alternate functions of preset buttons 1 and 3).


Pressing NEXT will fast forward the tape in the direction of play to the following blank passage or end of tape (whichever occurs first). If the end of tape is reached, the tape direction will change, and the appropriate track arrow annunciator will be displayed. Next is cancelled, and playing will be resumed in the new direction.


Pushing PREV will normally rewind the tape to the blank passage at the beginning of the current selection, with the following special exception: If the current selection has been playing for only a short period of time (between approximately 4 and 1(J seconds at the center of a C-60 tape) the tape will be rewound to the blank passage at the beginning of the previous selection. This feature permits the return to a previous selection with only one button actuation.


If the beginning of tape is reached, prev is cancelled, and playing will be resumed with no change in direction.


Next search can be cancelled by pressing NEXT Previous search can be cancelled by pressing PREV Play will resume if PREV is pressed during next search or NEXT is pressed during previous searching, the former function is cancelled and the latter function is selected.


Both next and previous search are cancelled by pressing TAPE, PROG, EJECT FWD, REY AM/FM, AX (if remote CD changer is present and loaded), power Off, or ignition Off.


Repeat - RPT Button


Pressing the RPT button alternately enables and disables the repeat feature. When enabled, the "RPT" annunciator will be displayed.

When the repeat feature is enabled. the current song will be repeated until the RPT button is pressed again to cancel the repeat feature.


The repeat feature is also cancelled by pressing program (arrow up/arrow down), FWD, REV, NEXT PREY AM/FM or AX (if remote CD changer is present and loaded). Cycling the ignition voltage or the power switch will cancel repeat play.


Dolby(R) Noise Reduction - NR Button


Pressing the momentary contact NR (noise reduction) button while the tape is playing will alternately enable and disable the Dolby(R) B noise reduction circuitry. The Dolby(R) trade system annunciator will appear in the display when the feature is active and the tape player is operating. The status of this feature is maintained in memory until battery power is interrupted.


Metal Tape Equalization


Metal tape sensing is automatic, and no user button is required or provided. Equalization for metal and Cr0 tapes will be automatically set by a tape deck sensor switch when appropriate, and the MTL annunciator will appear in the display when the feature is active and the tape player is operating.


Compact Disc - AX Button


The AX button is used in the tape mode to select CD play mode when the optional remote CD changer is present and loaded as indicated by the CD icon display annunciator. In this condition, the tape player will stop, and the track arrow annunciator will be turned off. The cassette icon annunciator will remain displayed to indicate that a tape is in the unit.


As the CD changer establishes tracking, the CD annunciator will be turned on. The LCD will display the target track number and disc number. The changer will begin playing the disc at the location where it was interrupted unless the magazine has since been ejected and reloaded. in this case, play will begin with the first available disc and track number. After approximately five seconds, the time of day will again be displayed.


AM/FM Button


In the tape mode, pushing the AM/FM button will cancel the tape operation. restore radio operation, and cancel the track arrow annunciator. The cassette icon annunciator will remain displayed to indicate that a tape is in the unit.


CLEAN Indicator


After approximately 30 hours of tape of tape player operation, the CLEAN indicator will be displayed during tape operation to indicate that the tape head, capstan, and guides should be cleaned. The CLEAN indicator is not normally displayed in radio modes or optional CD changer mode.

After cleaning the mechanism, the CLEAN indicator is reset to "off" by the following sequence:


1. User ejects the cassette and returns to radio mode.


2. User presses and holds the (up arrow) EJECT button. CLEAN will be displayed. After holding the (up arrow) EJECT button for five seconds, CLEAN will be reset and disappear from the display. The clean function timer will be reset to zero.


By following steps 1 and 2 above, the user can reset the tape clean timer at anytime.
