Theft Deterrent System

This product features a user programmable theft deterrent system intended to discourage theft by rendering the product inoperable after battery power interruption. The theft deterrent feature is identified by the words THEFT DETERRENT conspicuously printed on the face of the product.

Upon initial installation, the theft deterrent system is disarmed until programmed by the user. This allows normal installation and testing to be conveniently performed.

If battery power is removed after the system has been armed, the display will indicate "LOC" and the product will not operate. To restore operation of the product, the user determined four digit code must be reentered.

An alternate permanent factory code is stored in the unit which can be used to unlock the system in the event the user code is lost or forgotten.

The theft deterrent status is maintained in non-volatile memory and will retain the most recent user-programmed state following subsequent battery power interruptions. if the theft deterrent has been armed, the system will be locked after battery power interruption until a valid unlock code is entered

Operating States

The theft deterrent system has three main operating states. They are:

VULNERABLE - The theft deterrent system is not active. The unit behaves as if the theft deterrent system did not exist.

SECURE - The theft deterrent system is active and is watching for loss of battery voltage. The radio is fully operational.

LOCKED - While the theft deterrent system was in the SECURE mode, it detected loss of battery' voltage and the radio has been locked. All non-security related functions are disabled.

Operation and Controls

The security input mode allows the user to enter codes to activate or deactivate the theft deterrent system and allows authorized service personnel to recall a specially encrypted factory code for use if the user's code is lost or forgotten.

To enter the security input mode from the VULNERABLE or SECURE states, the following conditions must be met:

1. Ignition On

2. Radio power switch Off

3. Press presets 5 and 6 for five seconds

Once the radio is in the security input mode, one of two messages will be displayed depending on whether the theft deterrent system is activated. If the system is active (and the radio is not locked), "SEC" will be displayed. If the system is not active, "- - - -" will be displayed. All controls except Power, AM/FM, preset combination 2+3, Seek up/down, and Tune up/down shall be inoperative.

Security input mode is automatically activated when the unit is in the LOCKED state.

Code Entry

The code entry method was selected to allow the user to enter a code consisting of four digits of the full range (0-9). This permits the user to select any familiar four digit number sequence for easy recall (such as birthday or phone number, etc.).

The following procedure is used to enter a four digit code during security input mode or LOCKED state:

1. Press (left arrow) SEEK, SEEK (right arrow), (left arrow) TUNE, or TUNE (right arrow) to obtain "0000" display.

2. Press SEEK (right arrow) to increment the first digit 0-9 with rollover.

3. Press (left arrow) SEEK to increment the second digit 0-9 with rollover.

4. Press TUNE (right arrow) to increment the third digit 0-9 with rollover.

5. Press (left arrow) TUNE to increment the fourth digit 0-9 with rollover.

6. When the correct four-digit number appears in the display, press AM/FM to store the code.

System Activation

If the radio is in the VULNERABLE state, while security input mode (display shows "- - - -") the user may activate the system using the following procedure:

1. The user enters a four-digit code of his choice.

2. The system asks for verification - displays "rEP" for five seconds.

3. The user reenters his code.

4. If the two codes match, the radio goes to the SECURE state.

5. If the two codes do not match, "ERR" is displayed for approximately five seconds, and the radio remains in the VULNERABLE state. The user can again attempt to enter a valid code.

System Deactivation

If the radio is in the SECURE state, while in security input mode (display shows "SEC") the user may deactivate the system using the following procedure:

1. The user enters the four-digit code previously programmed.

2. If the code is correct, the radio will enter the VULNERABLE state.

3. If the code is incorrect, "ERR" is displayed for approximately five seconds, and the radio remains in the SECURE state.

Unlocking System After Power Loss

If the radio has lost battery power while in the SECURE state, the radio will be in the LOCKED state when power is restored (display will show "LOC"). The user may unlock the radio using the following procedure:

The radio is automatically in Security Input Mode.

Enter the user's previously programmed code as follows:

1. Press SEEK (right arrow), (left arrow) SEEK, TUNE, or (left arrow) TUNE to obtain "0000" display.

7. If the code is correct, the radio will enter the SECURE state, and normal operation may be resumed. All radio function memories will be returned to their default values following battery power interruptions.

8. If the code is incorrect, the radio will display "ERR" for approximately five seconds, and then a second attempt may be tried.

9. If the correct code is not entered in eight attempts, further attempts are prohibited for a period of one hour. "INOP" will be displayed if any attempt is made to enter an unlock during the one hour period.

IMPORTANT: During the one hour period the ignition must be in the "ACC" position with all accessories off. Otherwise, power will not reach the radio and it will never reset internally to allow itself to be unlocked.

Lock-out Protection

A factory unlock code (different from the user code) is permanently stored in the radio for use if the user code is unavailable. The factory code can be determined only by an authorized service facility. A procedure is available to authorized service personnel to obtain an encrypted form of the factors code using the radio controls and display. Using an established computer network, the authorized service facility can then obtain the actual factory code which will unlock the radio and return it to the SECURE state.

Determining Backup Unlocking Code For Secured Radio

If the security function is activated and the radio is disconnected from battery power, the radio will display "LOC". The radio will not operate until the correct code is entered. If the customer code is lost or unavailable, use the following procedures to determine the factory backup code. This procedure requires a tone dialing telephone.

Turn the ignition Switch to "ACC" or "ON" position.

2. Press and hold the "2" and "3" buttons until a four digit number appears on the display. This is the radio display code; record this number.

3. Using a tone dialing telephone, call 1-800-537-5140 or 1-317-451-8965 (USA and Canada).

4. When the computer prompts enter your retailer code in the following manner: Press 8, then the account number, then press "*". For example, if the account number is 12345, the 812345* would be entered.

5. When advised, enter the four-digit radio display code obtained in step 2, then press "*". The computer will respond with the factory backup code; record this number.

6. To unlock the secured radio, refer to "Unlocking System After Power Loss" earlier in this section.

If hardware tampering is detected by the system or in certain other hardware failure conditions, the display will show "ERR9" and the system will be permanently locked. If this display cannot be cleared by removing and reconnecting all power, the unit must be returned to an authorized repair center for service.
