Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Cylinder Head Disassembly

1. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds:
a. Remove spark plugs.
b. Remove the nine intake and eight exhaust manifold mounting nuts.
c. If cylinder head intake and exhaust manifold studs come out, nuts should be removed from studs, threads cleaned, and studs carefully installed. Torque to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).

CAUTION: Camshaft bearing caps are marked for proper installation.

2. Uniformly remove camshaft bearing cap attachment bolts and caps.
3. Remove each camshaft.

NOTE: Always set the lifters down on the flat surface (camshaft lobe contact area). Placing the lifter's valve stem side down will allow oil to drain from the lifter assembly and may cause a ticking noise during initial engine start-up.

CAUTION: Lifter bores are machined surfaces and must not be damaged when installing valve guides, valves, seals, caps, retainers and lifters.

4. Remove the hydraulic lifters. A magnet will easily pull the lifter out of its bore. Do not use pliers or a sharp object. Keep lifters in order and store with camshaft contact face downward.

CAUTION: The engine may have to sit 20 minutes to 2 hours after the camshafts are installed, allowing the lifters to bleed down.

NOTE: If hydraulic element is easily depressed, this indicates air in lifter at time of disassembly.

5. Remove valves and stem seals:
a. Using valve spring service tool SA9124E, remove the valve spring cap retainers.

CAUTION: Be careful not to damage valve stems during cap and retainer removal.

b. Remove the caps, springs, and valves.

c. Using seal removal service tool SA9102E-A, or equivalent, remove the valve stem oil seal.

CAUTION: Arrange the disassembled parts (caps, seals, springs, and valves) in correct order.
