Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Most A/C system malfunctions can be detected by a thorough inspection of the system and components.
1. Check the air intake duct, lower air deflector, condenser to radiator seal and the rear hood seal for missing or damaged parts.
2. Check outer surfaces of radiator and condenser cores to ensure air flow is not blocked by dirt, leaves or other matter.
3. Check for kinks in hoses and lines and refrigerant leaks using an electronic leak detector.
4. Check for a worn or loose compressor belt or malfunctioning belt tensioner.
5. Check blower motor operation at all speeds.
6. With blower on High, check for equal distribution of air out of all outlets.
7. Check operation of control mode lever and the distribution of air from the designated outlets.
8. Press ``RECIRC'' button with blower on high. A noticeable increase in air flow and sound should occur. Indicator should illuminate.
9. Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached.
10. Check operation of temperature control lever and air outlet temperature from hot to cold.
11. Press ``A/C'' button. Indicator should illuminate.
12. Check compressor for clutch engagement, slippage or noise.
13. Check electric cooling fan operation with A/C on.
14. Turn A/C "OFF." Compressor clutch should disengage.
