Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Chime Timing Operation

The chime is a function of the door jamb switch, the ignition switch with a key alarm switch, the driver door key cylinder switch, and the rear defog switch. When the appropriate switch is activated, the chime provides a rear defogger timer, and for vehicles with power door locks. door lock/unlock control and a delay dome lamp turnoff feature.

DOOR JAMB SWITCH

The door jamb switch is a plunger type switch mounted in the B-pillar. When the driver's door is opened beyond a prescribed distance, the switch contacts close signalling to the chime module that the door is open.

IGNITION AND KEY ALARM SWITCH ASSEMBLY

The key minder circuit is a set of contacts that are activated by the ignition module mechanical driver. When the switch is closed, the circuit pulls the chime module current input to ground. The ground circuit is provided by a wire ground to the switch.

DOOR KEY CYLINDER SWITCH

The switch is contained within the driver's door key cylinder and is activated by the turning of the key to the unlock position. When the key is turned clockwise in the driver's door cylinder, the driver's door will mechanically unlock. If the key is turned to unlock a second time within three seconds, AFTER being turned from unlocked to off, all doors will unlock. All turns within the three seconds after the initial mechanical unlock provide activation, except during door unlock relay-on time.

REAR DEFOG SWITCH AND TIMER

The chime module provides the timing function for the rear defog system. When the rear defog switch is pressed for the first time in an ignition cycle, the rear defog element and switch indicator will come On, and stay On for 15 minutes unless the ignition is turned to either the ACC or LOCK position. Subsequent activations of the switch, prior to cycling the ignition, when the rear defog is Off, will result in the same operation, except the time the defogger is On is reduced to 7.5 minutes.

DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK CONTROL

For vehicles with power door locks, the door lock/unlock system is designed so that the door unlock relay coil is in parallel with the right and left door lock switches to the chime. This design allows the chime to function in response to the door key cylinder switch during the dome lamp and power lock system operations.

DELAYED DOME LAMP

The chime module provides the timing function for the delayed dome lamp system. The delayed dome lamp is available on vehicles with power door locks. The dome lamp switch has three positions: OFF, DOOR, and ON. In the DOOR position, the dome lamp will be controlled by the doors. The dome lamp is illuminated when any of the doors are opened. Entering the vehicle through the driver's door and activating of the driver's door key cylinder switch will cause the dome lamp to be on for seven seconds after the driver's door is closed. However, entering the vehicle without activation of the driver door key cylinder or exiting the vehicle through the driver's door and closing the door will cause the dome lamp to stay on for eight seconds. Also, opening and closing the driver's door during the seven seconds delay will cancel the seven second time out and initiate the eight second delay. If the driver's door is not one of the doors causing the dome lamp to be ON, the dome lamp goes out as soon as all the doors are closed. If the ignition is turned on during the seven second or eight second delay, the dome lamp will immediately turn Off.
