Fuel Injector Balance Test - Without Scan Tool

WARNING: Do not allow smoking or the use of open flames in the area where work on the fuel system is taking place. Anytime the fuel system is being worked on, disconnect the negative battery cable, except for those tests where battery voltage is required.

NOTE: If engine is at operating temperature, allow a 10 minute cool down period.

Injector Pulse Detector - Noid Lite:

1. Before the Fuel Injector Balance Test is started, the electrical connector should be tested using a Noid Lite (Saturn Tool) SA9194E or injector:
a. Disconnect electrical connectors at fuel injectors.
b. Connect a Noid Lite to the female connector.
c. Crank the engine.
d. If the Noid Lite does not blink, the electrical problem must be corrected before continuing.

2. Remove air intake tube.

WARNING: Whenever fuel line fittings are loosened or disconnected, wrap a shop cloth around fitting while connecting gauge, to collect fuel place the cloth in an approved container.

Fuel System Pressure Relief:

3. Connect fuel gage bar kit (Saturn Tool) SA9127E to fuel pressure test port. Use 90 adapter (Saturn Tool) SA9403E.

Fuel Injector Tester:

4. Connect the fuel injector tester (Saturn Tool) SA9182E.
a. Connect the plug to a fuel injector.
b. Connect the red clip to the positive battery post.
c. Connect the black clip to a clean ground.
d. Check the power light; if it is not on, check the battery connection again.

5. Set the switch on the fuel injector tester to the 50 Pulse - 10 MS setting.
6. Cycle the ignition key On/Off several times (do not start engine) and bleed off all air in the system using the pressure gauge shut-off valve.

NOTE: It may be necessary to cycle the key On/Off a minimum of three times (the key must be off thirty seconds) to bleed all air from the system and achieve maximum system pressure.

7. Turn the ignition to the Off position for ten seconds. After ten seconds, turn ignition key to the On position (do not start engine) and record gauge pressure.

Sample Guage Readings For Balance Test:

NOTE: Gauge pressure should hold steady. If it does not, refer to "Fuel System Pressure Test Diagnostics."

8. Turn injector On by depressing the ACTIVATE INJECTOR button on the injector tester once.

NOTE: The output light should glow briefly as the ACTIVATE INJECTOR button is pushed. If it does not, check connections.

9. Record the pressure at the instant the gauge needle stops moving and subtract this value from the first reading.

NOTE: The engine must be started after two cylinders have been tested to prevent flooding or internal damage.

10. Connect the injector test lead to the next fuel injector and repeat steps 8-10. Do this for each fuel injector. Test any fuel injector that appears faulty. (This is any fuel injector that has a +or- 1O kPa [1.5 psi] difference in pressures from the average.)

NOTE: The entire test must be repeated at least twice. Engine must be started and ran for three minutes prior to completing second test.

11. Check that all fuel injector connectors are connected. Pull back to insure a positive engagement.
12. Remove fuel gage bar adapter from fuel pressure test port and recap it.
13. Install air intake tube.
14. Start engine and check for leaks.
