Vehicle Scrapping

WARNING: Some SIR equipped vehicles that have live (undeployed) inflator modules may have to be scrapped because they have completed their useful life or have been severely damaged in a non-deployment type accident. The following procedure should be followed when scrapping a vehicle with an undeployed module.
1. Place ignition switch in Off position and lower driver and passenger windows.
2. Ensure driver's side inflator module is secured to steering wheel.
3. Ensure passenger's side inflator module is secured to instrument panel.
4. Remove all loose objects from front seat and module cover(s).
5. Disarm air bag system as described under Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems).
6. Cut both wires of each yellow two-way connector away from vehicle harness, leaving at least 6 inches of wire at the connector.
7. Splice two 18 gauge wires, 15 feet long, into steering wheel module circuit wiring at base of steering column.
8. Splice two 18 gauge wires, 15 feet long, into passenger's side module circuit below instrument panel.
9. Ensure vehicle interior is free of loose or flammable objects. Do not allow anyone to remain inside vehicle.
10. Stretch wires away from vehicle to their full length.
11. Apply 12 volts across wires to deploy module. Do not touch metal areas of inflator module for 10 minutes due to heat generated by deployment.
