Clutch

Disassemble

1. Separate 1st gear needle bearing from inner race, then remove 1st gear thrust washer.

2. Remove backing plate snap ring, then backing plate, clutch plates, and clutch apply plate, if equipped.

3. Using clutch piston spring compression tool No. SA9146T, or equivalent, compress spring.

4. Using suitable snap ring pliers, remove spring snap ring.

5. Slowly release spring tension, then remove return spring assembly.

6. Install air check fixture tool Nos. SA9147T (1st), SA9109T (2nd, 3rd) or SA9110T (4th), or equivalents, and wrap clutch housing in suitable towel. Apply air pressure to housing to remove piston from bore.

7. If the 1st clutch is being replaced, a new bearing and race will have to be installed.

Assemble

1. Clean housing with suitable solvent and air dry.

2. On 1st clutch, install seal protector too No. SA9117T-3, or equivalent, to clutch housing.

3. On 2nd, 3rd, and 4th clutches, install tool No. SA9117T-2, or equivalent, to housing, then install seal protector tool No. SA9117T-3, or equivalent.

4. Lubricate clutch seal with petroleum jelly and install to piston installer tool No. SA9117T-1, or equivalent. One side is used for 1st clutch and other side is for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

5. Position installer tool in clutch housing, then install piston.

6. Inspect piston seals for proper installation.

7. Install piston return spring assembly to clutch housing.

8. Install piston return spring compression tool No. SA9146T, or equivalent, and compress spring.

9. Using suitable snap ring pliers, install snap ring.

10. When replacing the 1st clutch, or if a replacement transaxle was installed in vehicle, install Belleville spring as shown, noting the following:

a. When installing the Belleville spring, the convex side must be installed towards the clutch piston, and the concave side should be installed towards the clutch pack.

b. Since the curvature of the Belleville spring is not that great, it may be necessary to determine the convex side from the concave side.

c. The 1st clutch only uses three internal and three external clutch plates, starting with an external plate after installing the Belleville spring.

11. Install clutch plates beginning with internal tang. Plates should be soaked in new Dexron IIE for ten minutes. Alternate plates with fiber side facing upward as follows:

a. First: three internal and three external.

b. Second: five internal and four external.

c. Third: four internal and three external.

d. Fourth: three internal and two external.

12. Install clutch backing plate and selective retaining ring.

Inspection

1. Using tool Nos. SA9111T-1 and SA9111T-2, or equivalents, position weights on clutch backing plate.

2. Install air check fixture tool Nos. SA91 47T (1st), SA9109T (2nd, 3rd) or SA9110T (4th), or equivalents.

3. Position suitable dial indicator with tip resting on weight.

4. Apply 60 psi air pressure to clutch (1st) piston and release. Apply 80 psi air pressure to clutch (2nd, 3rd, 4th) piston and release.

5. Zero dial indicator, apply pressure as outlined in step 4 and measure piston travel. Endplay should be as indicated:

a. 1st, 0.038-0.055 inch.

b. 2nd,0.060-0.O86inch.

c. 3rd, 0.046-0.061 inch.

d. 4th, 0.036-0.046 inch.

6. If endplay is not as indicated, replace snap ring.

7. Install 1st gear thrust washer and 1st clutch needle bearing on 1st clutch as required, ensuring washer tabs align with hub slots.
