Removal and Replacement

1. Remove air induction tube.
2. Lift resonator upward to disengage from engine service support bracket.
3. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
a. Actuator connector.
b. Vehicle and turbine speed sensor.
c. Transaxle temperature sensor.
d. Selector switch connector.
e. Two ground terminals from top two converter housing bolts.
f. Unclip oxygen sensor wire retainer from converter housing.
4. Remove top two converter housing to engine bolts, then insert suitable M12 x 1.75 x 100mm (4 inch) guide bolt with bolt head cut off, to top rear converter housing bolt hole.
5. Remove and discard DIS module to housing attaching bolts, then remove wire module coil to coolant outlet.
6. Loosen two front transaxle mount to transaxle bolts.
7. Secure radiator to upper radiator support with mechanics wire.
8. Install suitable engine support equipment, as follows:
a. Install support bar feet on outer edge of shock tower.
b. Connect bar hooks to engine support brackets.
c. Position stabilizer foot on engine block to right of engine oil dipstick.
d. Adjust hooks, then stabilize to remove looseness.
9. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transaxle fluid.
10. Remove front wheel assemblies.
11. Remove right, left and front splash shields.
12. Remove and discard outer cotter pin from lower ball joints, loosen attaching nut, then back off until top of nut is even with top of threads.
13. Using ball joint tool No. SA9132S, or equivalent, separate ball joint from steering knuckle.

WARNING: Outer CV joint has an ABS speed sensor ring. Incorrect tool usage may result in ring damage or loss of ABS.

14. Remove down pipe to manifold attaching nuts, then down pipe to powertrain stiffening bracket bolts, then down pipe to catalytic converter attaching bolts, then remove down pipe and discard front exhaust pipe to manifold and converter gaskets.
15. Remove engine to transaxle mount bracket attaching bolts, then remove bracket.
16. Remove rear transaxle mount bracket to transaxle bolts, then loosen mount attaching bolt to allow bracket to hang.
17. Remove right side steering rack to cradle bolt, then back out bolt on left side as far as possible.
18. Disconnect brake line from rear cradle bracket.
19. Remove dust cover to converter housing attaching bolts, then remove cover.
20. Remove torque converter to flywheel attaching bolts.
21. Remove front transaxle mount to cradle attaching nuts.
22. Remove lower engine mount to cradle attaching nuts.
23. Remove lower transaxle mount to cradle attaching nuts.
24. Depress transaxle connector plastic tabs, then pull cooler lines from transaxle, then install 3/8 inch rubber hose between cooler lines to prevent leakage and dirt from entering lines.
25. Using suitable powertrain support dolly and two 4 inch x 4 inch x 36 inch pieces of wood support cradle on dolly.
26. Remove four cradle to body attaching bolts, then lower cradle from vehicle, ensure two large spacing washers between cradle and body are attached to prevent loss.
27. Lower vehicle, lower transaxle side of engine support bar hook enough to allow valve body cover to clear frame rail, then raise vehicle. It may be requires to lower rear of transaxle to clear body by adjusting engine support equipment.
28. Support transaxle with a suitable jack.
29. Using a large screwdriver or pry bar, separate lefthand side axle from transaxle. Do not allow pry tool to contact axle seal or seal damage may occur.
30. Remove lower converter housing to engine attaching bolts, then install a suitable guide bolt to lower front converter housing.
31. Separate transaxle from engine, then lower enough to reach transaxle shifter cable.
32. Disconnect shifter cable, then remove shifter cable from converter housing.
33. Lower transaxle, then using cooler cleaner tool No. SA-165T, or equivalent, clean oil cooler and lines.
34. Reverse procedure to install, noting to tighten bolts and nuts to specifications.
