Removal and Installation






1. Disconnect battery cables, then raise and support vehicle and remove air induction system.

2. Remove battery hold-down, battery and tray.

3. Remove transaxle strut to midrail bracket and cradle bracket attaching bolts, then loosen transaxle strut to transaxle bracket attaching bolt and position strut aside.

4. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:

a. Back-up light switch.

b. Vehicle speed sensor.

c. Remove and discard vent tube clip.

d. Two upper clutch housing ground terminals.

e. Oxygen sensor from clutch housing.

5. Remove upper clutch housing the engine bolts, then install four inch guide bolts in upper rear clutch housing bolt hole.

6. Remove DIS coil attaching screws, then the coil.

7. Loosen two front transaxle mount bolts.

8. Remove shift cables from shift arms and clutch housing.

9. Turn clutch slave cylinder � counterclockwise while pushing into clutch housing, then remove cylinder.

10. Secure radiator to upper support with mechanics wire.

11. Install engine lifting equipment.

12. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transaxle fluid.

13. Remove front wheels, then right, left and front splash shields.

14. Remove engine mount to cradle attaching nuts.

15. Remove engine strut cradle bracket to cradle fasteners.

16. Remove transaxle to cradle mount.

17. Remove front exhaust pipe.

18. Remove steering gear to cradle attaching bolts and support steering gear with suitable wire.

19. Remove brake line bracket push pin at rear of cradle.

20. Remove engine to transaxle stiffening bracket.

21. Remove clutch housing dust cover.

22. Remove and discard lower ball joint cotter pins, then loosen nut to top of bolt thread.

23. Using tool No. SA9132S, or equivalent, separate ball joint from lower control arm. Outer CV joint has an ABS speed sensor ring. Failure to use the proper tool will result in loss of ABS or system damage.

24. Using suitable large screwdriver or pry bar, separate left side axle from transaxle, pull axle slightly rearward and install axle seal protector tool No. SA91112t or equivalent.

25. Position a suitable powertrain support dolly and two four inch by four inch by 36 inch wood pieces to support cradle.

26. Remove cradle to body attaching bolts, then lower cradle, ensuring two large rear cradle spacers are attached.

27. Support transaxle with a jack stand.

28. Using a screwdriver or pry bar, separate left axle from transaxle. Do not allow tool to contact or damage axle seal.

29. Separate transaxle from engine enough to clear intermediate shaft, then lower transaxle to remove.

30. Reverse procedure to install.
