EVAP - Knocking or Rattle Noise at Right Front of Floor
BULLETIN NO.: 97-T-39AISSUE DATE: December, 1999
GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Engine-07
CORPORATION NO.: 99-06-04-058
SUBJECT:
Knocking or Rattle Noise at Right Front of Floor to Front of Dash Area During Driveway, Parking Lot Maneuvers or Stop and Go Traffic (Install New EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid With Longer Purge Hose)
Due to a revision under Parts Requirements, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 97-T-39, which should be discarded.
MODELS AFFECTED:
1996 and 1997 Saturn S-Series vehicles
CONDITION
Some customers may comment on a knocking or rattle-type noise coming from the right front of the floor to front of dash area when the vehicle is in gear and is accelerated lightly off idle. This noise will be most noticeable during driveway or parking lot maneuvers, or while creeping forward in stop and go traffic. The noise may sound like an engine knock.
CAUSE
These noises may be caused by normal EVAP canister purge solenoid actuation noise being transmitted through the rubber hose to the front of the dash as a result of a loose fit between the EVAP canister purge solenoid and its bracket.
CORRECTION
Verify complaint noise with customer. After the noise has been identified, the EVAP canister purge solenoid can be checked for being the cause of the noise(s) by using the scan tool special test. With the scan tool, when the noise(s) is heard, turn the EVAP canister purge solenoid Off (0%).
^ If the noise(s) is eliminated with the EVAP canister purge solenoid Off, proceed to the repair procedure in this bulletin.
^ If the noise(s) is not eliminated, refer to the appropriate year "Engine/Fuel/Air Intake/ Exhaust Service Manual," and/or other bulletins that relate to noises that appear to be coming from front of dash for diagnosis.
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist.
3. Disconnect electrical and purge line connections from EVAP canister purge solenoid. (Solenoid is located directly above the starter motor.)
4. Remove EVAP canister purge solenoid retaining bolt and remove EVAP canister purge solenoid from vehicle.
5. Remove rubber purge line from metal line at front of dash and discard.
6. Install new EVAP canister purge solenoid (P/N 21006689) and retaining bolt.
Torque: 20 N.m (14 ft-lbs)
IMPORTANT
New purge line is 508 mm (20 in.).
7. Route rubber purge line that goes between the EVAP canister purge solenoid assembly and the metal line at front of dash. Loop purge line as shown in illustration to make sure it is positioned downwards.
8. Connect EVAP caniser purge line from intake manifold to EVAP canister purge solenoid.
9. Connect electrical connector. Push electrical connector until a click is heard, and then pull back on electrical connector to confirm a positive engagement.
