BULLETIN NO.: 98-T-32ISSUE DATE: September, 1998
GROUP/SEQ. NO.: Chassis-O5
CORPORATION NO.: 883211
SUBJECT:
Power Steering Pump Drive Shaft Seal Leak
(Replace Power Steering Pump)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1999 Saturn vehicles
CONDITION:
Some customers may comment on a power steering pump fluid leak.
Diagnosis may identify the leak to be coming from the power steering pump drive shaft seal.
CAUSE:
The condition may be caused by an incorrect pump drive shaft surface finish.
CORRECTION:
Install new design power steering pump or replace pump drive shaft seal as required by the following procedure.
PROCEDURE
1. Leak test the power steering system to verify source of leak.
A dye and black light kit (SA9175-NE) is available for finding leaks. (Refer to the manufacturer's directions when using the kit.)
a. Pour the specified amount of dye into the power steering pump.
b. Operate the vehicle under normal operating conditions.
c. Direct the black light toward power steering pump. The dye will appear as a brightly colored fluid and lead to the leak path.
2. If the leak path is from the pump drive shaft seal and the vehicle was built before or including 1998 model year VIN WZ293193, replace power steering pump assembly.
3. If the leak path is from the pump drive shaft seal and the vehicle was built in the 1999 model year or after 1998 model year VIN WZ293193, replace the pump drive shaft seal only. (Refer to "Power Steering Pump Drive Shaft Seal" procedure in the Steering section of the appropriate model year Chassis Service Manual).
