Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Evacuating the System

1. Connect manifold gauge set and vacuum pump to high and low side service ports. Turn on vacuum pump and slowly open high and low side service valves to pump. Allow system to evacuate for 20-30 minutes. Note vacuum gauge reading.
2. Close high and low side service valves. Shut off vacuum pump.
3. Watch low side gauge for vacuum loss (one to three minutes).
^ If 1055 is less than 3.38 kPa (1 in. Hg) from level recorded in Step 1, proceed to charging the A/C system.
^ If vacuum loss is greater than 3.38 kPa (1 in. Hg) from level recorded in Step 1, charge with 0.23 kg (0.5 lb.) R-134a. Leak test, repair leaks, and re-test.

IMPORTANT: Disconnect high side service valve from service port and check for vacuum loss before leak testing.
