D. Remove Steering Wheel and Inflator Module

LHD SHOWN; RHD SIMILAR




1. Disable the SIR system. (Refer to "Disabling the SIR System" procedure in the front.)




2. Turn steering wheel to the 3 o'clock position.
3. Remove inflator module by inserting a short flat blade screwdriver into the triangle shaped hole in the rear steering wheel shroud.
4. Turn the screwdriver to release the spring fastener, while lifting up on the corner of the inflator module closest to that fastener.
5. Repeat step 4 for the next fastener.
6. Turn steering wheel to 9 o'clock position.
7. Repeat step 4 until all spring fasteners are released.
8. Disconnect inflator module harness and horn lead.
9. Remove inflator module.




10. Disconnect harness from steering wheel.

NOTE: Always align the front wheels to the straight-ahead position when installing or removing the steering wheel to assure proper orientation of the SIR coil assembly behind the steering wheel. If the SIR coil assembly is not properly oriented to the steering column assembly, the coil will be damaged.




11. Remove steering wheel attachment nut and discard.




12. Install Steering Wheel Puller J1859a -A (Bridge) by fitting Steering Wheel Puller J42578 Legs into steering wheel puller holes.
13. Install puller bridge over puller legs and finger tighten steering wheel puller nuts on legs.
14. Insert center bolt through bridge and align with steering column shaft.
15. Tighten center bolt until steering wheel is disengaged.
16. Remove steering wheel while feeding wiring through wheel opening.

NOTE: If yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent coil from rotating. If coil is rotated, refer to "Repositioning SIR Coil Assembly" procedure in the Restraints.

17. Insert yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent coil assembly from rotating.
