10. Front and Rear Crankshaft Oil Seals Replacement

- Tools Required
- SA9104E Front Crank Seal Replacer
- SA9103E Regulator Valve Remover/Replacer
- SA9121E Rear Crank Seal Replacer

IMPORTANT:
- The front and rear engine crankshaft oil seals are replaced without removing the engine from the vehicle.
- The rear crankshaft seal installation tool SA9121E installs the seal 1.0 mm (0.040 inch) deeper into the carrier than the factory. Installing the seal 1.0 mm (0.040 inch) will make sure the seal lip contacts a different surface area on the rear crankshaft flange.

1. Replacement of front cover oil seal:

a. Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the oil seal.

b. Using the seal installer service tool SA9104E, install the new oil seal until its fully seated.

IMPORTANT: The new oil seal should be installed with the front cover installed. The installation tool uses the crankshafts threads to pull the seal into place. An arbor press and seal installer SA9104E must be used to install the front seal if the cover is REMOVED. Never tap on the seal or seal installer with a hammer.

c. Apply a coat of oil to the seal lip and inside diameter of the front cover seal bore.

d. If the oil pump and regulator has been removed from the front cover, the valve must be replaced. install the new regulator valve (if removed), using service tool SA9103E. Install oil pump assembly, and cover plate.
Torque: 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.)

IMPORTANT: The oil pump cover screws are coated with a sealant to prevent oil leakage. New screws must be installed, if screws are removed.

There are two methods of replacing the rear crankshaft oil seal. Special tools are required for both procedures to make sure the seal lip is not damaged.

NOTICE: To prevent oil leaks and seal damage, the engine's oil pan must be removed if the rear oil seal carrier requires replacement.

2. Replacement of rear crankshaft oil seal.
Method one:

a. If the rear oil seal carrier is removed from the cylinder block, use a screwdriver and hammer to tap out the oil seal.

NOTICE: Do not allow screwdriver blade to contact crankshaft flange seal surface.

b. If the rear oil seal carrier is not removed from the cylinder block, use the pry tangs provided in the carrier to remove the seal with a screwdriver and hammer.
c. Check the oil seal lip contact surface of the crankshaft for scratches or damage. If rust is present, remove using Scotch-Brite pad. Do not use emery cloth, sandpaper or other abrasive materials. Rust removal is necessary to prevent seal lip damage during installation.

d. With the crankshaft and rear carrier installed on the cylinder block, use seal installer SA9121E to install a new oil seal. The service tool prevents rolling the seal's lip. Never tap on seal or seal installer with a hammer.
e. Apply a film of oil to the seal lip and inside diameter of the carrier.
Method two:
a. If the rear crankshaft oil seal carrier is not installed on the cylinder block, apply light coat of engine oil to the seal lip and inside diameter of the carrier.

b. Using seal installer SA9121E and a arbor press, push the oil seal into the carrier. Never tap on the seal or seal installer with a hammer.

IMPORTANT:
- The rear crankshaft oil seal should be installed with the crankshaft and carrier assembled in the cylinder block whenever possible. The seal installer SA9121E is designed to pull the seal in to place and make sure it is properly seated.
- The seal installer SA9121E is designed to guide the seal over the rear crankshaft flange. The service tool prevents rolling the seal's lip.

c. Apply a 2.0 mm (0.080 inch) diameter bead of RTV to the carrier.

IMPORTANT: Assemble while RTV is still wet (within three minutes). Do not wait for RTV to skin over.

d. Install the four rear crankshaft seal carrier bolts.
Torque: 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.)

3. If the rear and side cylinder block oil gallery plugs have been removed, clean the threads and apply Saturn P/N 21485276 (Loctite 290 or equivalent). Do not over-torque the plugs.
Torque: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
