Passenger Inflator Module (Air Bag)

PASSENGER INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG)

CAUTION: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG). AFTER DEPLOYMENT THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) SURFACE MAY CONTAIN A SMALL AMOUNT OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A BY-PRODUCT OF THE DEPLOYMENT REACTION, THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN AND EYES. MOST OF THE POWDER ON THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) IS HARMLESS. AS A PRECAUTION, WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG), AND WASH YOUR HANDS WITH MILD SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.

CAUTION: WHEN YOU ARE CARRYING AN UNDEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE:
^ DO NOT CARRY THE INFLATOR MODULE BY THE WIRES OR CONNECTOR ON THE INFLATOR MODULE.
^ MAKE SURE THE BAG OPENING POINTS AWAY FROM YOU.

WHEN YOU ARE STORING AN UNDEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE, MAKE SURE THE BAG OPENING POINTS AWAY FROM THE SURFACE ON WHICH THE INFLATOR MODULE RESTS. WHEN YOU ARE STORING A STEERING COLUMN, DO NOT REST THE COLUMN WITH THE BAG OPENING FACING DOWN AND THE COLUMN VERTICAL. PROVIDE FREE SPACE FOR THE AIR BAG TO EXPAND IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT. OTHERWISE, PERSONAL INJURY MAY RESULT.


IMPORTANT: In the event deployment has occurred, refer to "Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision".

REMOVAL
1. Disable SIR System. (Refer to "Disabling SIR System" procedure.)






2. Remove screws on underside of upper I/P trim panel, passenger side.

IMPORTANT: Be careful not to damage VIN plate when removing or replacing upper I/P trim panel.

3. Disengage clips at locations by grasping edges of upper I/P trim panel and lifting up.
4. Disengage hook and loop fasteners at rear of upper I/P trim panel by reaching under panel and lifting straight up.
5. Raise upper I/P trim panel enough to clear VIN plate.






6. Remove right I/P endcap assembly:
a. Remove screws.
b. Carefully disengage clips at I/P retainer assembly locations. Use of a blunt tool will aid in disengaging clips.
c. Maneuver the assemblies past inner I/P retainer assembly and weatherstrips.






7. Separate two clips from clip locations attaching I/P bezel to retainer assembly. Access is necessary to move inflator module door from locator pin.






8. Remove screws attaching inflator module door to retainer assembly.
9. Remove air bag wire harness from rosebud loop.






1O. Remove glove compartment front retainers by turning counter-clockwise. Allow glove compartment bottom to hang on rear pins.






11. Remove inflator module to I/P brace bolts.

IMPORTANT: Access right-side bolt through hole in glove compartment top. Access left-side bolt through opening at left end of glove compartment top.

12. Grasp inflator module and pull gently while releasing plastic tabs at each end.

INSTALLATION






1. Guide inflator module wire harness through opening and route over foam I/P insulator.
2. Insert inflator module into opening until plastic tabs lock.
3. Install inflator module to I/P brace bolts.

Torque: 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)






4. Insert glove compartment front retainers and rotate clockwise to secure.
5. Secure inflator module wire harness with rosebud loop.
6. Position inflator module door to retainer assembly and install screws.

Torque: 2.2 N.m (20 in-lbs)






7. Install two clips into clip location attaching I/P bezel to retainer assembly.






8. Install right I/P endcap assembly:
a. Maneuver the assembly past inner I/P retainer assembly and weatherstrips.
b. Snap clips into I/P retainer assembly locations.
C. Install screws.

Torque: 2.2 N.m (20 in-lbs)






9. Position upper I/P trim panel on retainer assembly.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage VIN plate when removing or replacing upper I/P trim panel.

IMPORTANT: Be sure upper I/P trim panel seal is correctly seated on forward edge before installing upper trim panel.

10. Align tabs on sides of upper I/P trim panel with openings in windshield garnish molding.
11. Snap in clips at clip locations.
12. Install (2) screws on underside of upper I/P trim panel on passenger's side of vehicle.

Torque: 7 N.m (62 in-lbs)

13. Close glove compartment door.
