Engine/ABS Controls - MIL/ABS Lamp ON/DTC's Set

SUBJECT:
(MIL) SERVICE ENGINE SOON Telltale Lamp ON, ABS Telltale Lamp may Come ON Intermittently and/or Stay ON with DTCs U1000, U1040 and C0550 present and/or Stored in History. There May Also be Loss of Communication with the EBTCM (Repair Loose Grounds as Necessary).

MODELS AFFECTED:
2000 - 2002 Saturn S-Series vehicles equipped with antilock braking system

CONDITION:

Some customers may comment the (MIL) SERVICE ENGINE SOON, Brake and ABS telltale lamps may come ON intermittently and/or stay ON.

CAUSE:

This condition may be caused by loose or poor grounds at one of the following locations:

^ ABS Control Assembly (EBTCM)

^ Chassis

^ Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

^ Chassis ground stud located near the Underhood Junction Block (UHJB)

^ Left front strut tower

CORRECTION:

Refer to "Service Procedure" in this bulletin and repair as necessary.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Remove battery hold down bracket.





3. Remove wire terminals from EBTCM/Chassis ground stud (1).

4. Install old fastener to EBTCM/Chassis ground stud (1) and run fastener down stud to space fram and back several times to chase the threads and loosen undercoating.

5. Remove and discard fastener.

6. Clean all remaining debris from threads of ground stud using a small wire brush.

7. Install wire terminals to EBTCM/Chassis ground stud (1).

8. Install new fastener P/N 11516192 to EBTCM/Chassis ground stud.

Torque:

EBTCM/Chassis Ground Stud Fastener: 25 N.m (18 ft-lbs)

9. Install battery hold bracket.

Torque:

Battery Case Bracket Stud and Nut: 9 N.m (80 in-lbs)





10. Remove fastener from PCM/Chassis ground stud (2) located on left front strut tower and repeat steps 3-7.

11. Install new fastener P/N 21006316 to PCM/Chassis ground stud.

Torque:

PCM/Chassis Ground Stud fastener: 12 N.m (9 ft-lbs)

12. Connect negative battery cable.

Torque:

Battery Terminal Bolt: 17 N.m (13 ft-lbs)

13. Using the Tech 2, clear all DTC information stored in history.

14. Verify repair.

15. If condition is still present, refer to diagnostics in the applicable S-Series Service Manual for the specific diagnostic information.
