Roll Connector Repositioning

ROLL CONNECTOR

CAUTION: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG). AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) SURFACE MAY CONTAIN A SMALL AMOUNT OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A BY-PRODUCT OF THE DEPLOYMENT REACTION, THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN AND EYES. MOST OF THE POWDER ON THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) IS HARMLESS. AS A PRECAUTION, WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG), AND WASH YOUR HANDS WITH MILD SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.

CAUTION: WHEN YOU ARE CARRYING AN UNDEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE:
- DO NOT CARRY THE INFLATOR MODULE BY THE WIRES OR CONNECTOR ON THE INFLATOR MODULE.
- MAKE SURE THE BAG OPENING POINTS AWAY FROM YOU.

WHEN YOU ARE STORING AN UNDEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE, MAKE SURE THE BAG OPENING POINTS AWAY FROM THE SURFACE ON WHICH THE INFLATOR MODULE RESTS. WHEN YOU ARE STORING A STEERING COLUMN, DO NOT REST THE COLUMN WITH THE BAG OPENING FACING DOWN AND THE COLUMN VERTICAL. PROVIDE FREE SPACE FOR THE AIR BAG TO EXPAND IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT. OTHERWISE, PERSONAL INJURY MAY RESULT.

IMPORTANT: In the event deployment has occurred, refer to "Repairs and Inspections Required After an Accident".

REPOSITIONING ROLL CONNECTOR

NOTICE: If roll connector is not properly oriented to steering column, it will be damaged.

IMPORTANT: If yellow tab is inadvertently removed during installation or removal, and coil hub has been rotated the roll connector must be repositioned.

1. Gently rotate roll connector hub clockwise with tab removed until slight tension is present.
2. Gently rotate roll connector hub counter clockwise(count approximately five revolutions) until slight tension is present.
3. Gently rotate roll connector hub clockwise one half of the number of revolutions counted in step 2 (approximately 2.5 times).
4. Rotate smallest distance required to align yellow tab.

5. Install yellow tab. Use tape if tab is unavailable.
1) Roll Connector
2) Yellow Tab

REMOVAL

NOTICE: Always align the front wheels to the straight ahead position when removing or installing a roll connector.

If a roll connector is removed without the wheels in the straight ahead position, the same roll connector may be installed if the steering shaft and coil hub have not rotated.
1. Disable SIR system.
2. Remove driver inflator module.
3. Remove steering wheel.
4. Remove ignition switch bezel.
5. Separate coil wire harness from rosebud-type fastener below steering column.
6. Disconnect horn/cruise connector.
7. Remove SIR coil assembly.
- On 2000 model year vehicles, remove roll connector retaining fasteners.
- On 2001 model year vehicles, remove roll connector by carefully disengaging plastic retaining tabs with a small flat blade screwdriver.

8. Guide roll connector wiring harness from below steering column and remove roll connector.

INSTALLATION

NOTICE: New roll connectors have a yellow plastic tab to prevent rotation. Do not remove this tab until after steering wheel installation.

1. Route roll connector wiring harness through rectangular slot below steering shaft.
2. Position roll connector.
- On 2000 model year vehicles, install retaining screws.
- On 2001 model year vehicles, push to install plastic retainer tabs.
Torque: Roll Connector Fasteners: 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
