Inside Rearview Mirror - Operating Instructions

NO: 02-I-03
DATE: January, 2002

SUBJECT:
Operating Instructions for VUE Inside Rearview Mirrors.

Electrochromic Day/Night Rearview Mirror with Compass and Temperature Display (RPO DF5).

Electrochromic Day/Night Rearview Mirror with Compass, Temperature Display, and OnStar(R) (RPO DH3).

TO: Saturn General Manager, Sales Manager, Fixed Operations Manager, and Technicians

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide instructions for two of the three available inside rearview mirrors on the Saturn VUE. This information was inadvertently omitted from the 2002 Saturn VUE Owner's Handbook and 2002 Service Manual. The instructions cover how to operate the dimming feature, change the temperature/compass display, and also how to calibrate the compass.

Electrochromic Day/Night Rearview Mirror with Compass and Temperature Display.

Your vehicle may have an automatic-dimming rearview mirror with a compass and temperature display.

When turned on, an electrochromic mirror automatically dims to the proper level to minimize glare from headlamps behind you after dark.

The mirror has an eight-point compass and temperature display in the upper right corner of the mirror face. The display shows the current outside temperature and the vehicles current direction.

Automatic Dimming Feature

The automatic dimming feature is turned on or off by briefly pressing the COMP button located on the bottom of the mirror face. A light on the mirror will be lit when the feature is turned on. The light will go out when the feature is turned off.

Temperature Display

The TEMP button located on the bottom of the mirror face changes the temperature display. You can select degrees Fahrenheit (°F), degrees Celsius (°C), or turn the display off.

Compass Operation

There is a compass display in the window in the upper right corner of the mirror face. The compass displays a maximum of two characters. For example, "NE" is displayed for north-east.

Compass Calibration

Press and hold the COMP button down for 6 seconds to activate the compass calibration mode. If your vehicle has the mirror with the compass, temperature display and OnStar(R) system, press the on/off button for 9 seconds. "CAL" will be displayed in the compass/temperature window on the mirror.

The mirror can be calibrated in one of two ways:

^ Drive the vehicle in circles at 5 mph (8 km/h) or less until the "CAL" display disappears.

^ Drive the vehicle on your everyday routine. (This method may take longer to calibrate.)

Compass Variance

The mirror is set to zone eight upon leaving the factory. It will be necessary to adjust the compass to compensate for compass variance if you live outside of zone eight. Under certain circumstances, such as during cross-country trip, it will be necessary to adjust for compass variance. Compass variance is the difference between the earth's magnetic north and true geographic north. If not adjusted to account for compass variance, your compass could give false readings.

To adjust for compass variance, do the following:

1. Find your current location and variance zone number on the map.

2. Press and hold the COMP button for 3 seconds. If your vehicle has the mirror with the compass, temperature display and OnStar(R) system, press the on/off button for 6 seconds. Release the button when the "Zone" is displayed. The number shown is the current zone number.

3. Scroll through the zone numbers that appear in the compass/temperature window on the mirror by pressing the COMP button or the on/off button. Once you find your zone number, release the button. After about 4 seconds, the mirror will return to the compass and temperature display, and the new zone number will be set.

Electrochromic Day/Night Rearview Mirror with Compass, Temperature Display, and OnStar(R).

Your vehicle may have an automatic-dimming rearview mirror with a compass and temperature display and the OnStar(R) system.

When turned on, the mirror functions exactly like the electrochromic mirror described previously. The mirror also has an eight-point compass and temperature display in the upper right corner on the mirror face. There is also a three-button OnStar(R) system.

Automatic Dimming Feature

The automatic dimming feature is turned on and off by pressing the far left button, located on the lower part of the mirror face, for up to 3 seconds. A light on the mirror will be lit when the feature is turned on. The light will go out when the feature is turned off.

Temperature Display

The on/off button located on the far left of the bottom of the mirror face changes the temperature display.

By briefly depressing the on/off button, you can select degrees Fahrenheit (°F), degrees Celsius (°C), A or turn the display off.

Compass Operation

There is a compass display in the window in the upper right comer of the mirror face. The compass displays a maximum of two characters. For example, "NE" is displayed for north-east.
