Fig.41 Air injection system. 2WD Non-California models.:

When the coolant temperature is below 95 deg. F, the electronic control unit signals the solenoid valve to allow manifold vacuum to open the cut-off valve(s) which is mounted within the Air Suction Valve(s)(ASV). The solenoid valve remains open for approximately 2 minutes. At the end of 2 minutes, the control unit turns off the solenoid valve and air injection is stopped.
The Air Injection System operation should be suspect anytime high tailpipe emissions or unusual exhaust noises are present and the ignition and fuel systems have been verified to operate normally. Testing and inspection are as follows:
a. If the system uses a vaccum operated control assembly, check to ensure that the controller is functioning by applying a vacuum to the unit. It should hold vacuum. If not, replace the vacuum control valve assembly.
b. Remove the screws attaching the reed valve cover to the case. Inspect the assembly after cleaning with clean gasoline. Any cracks, dents, or warpage of the case, reed valve or reed stopper indicates replacement is necessary.
