Freon Handling, R-134A Systems

R-134a is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant designed to protect the earth's ozone layer. However, use of an approved R-134a recovery device is required when it is necessary to discharge the A/C system for any reason. While this transparent, colorless refrigerant is not flammable or explosive, it is dangerous because its rapid evaporation rate causes it to freeze anything it contacts.

CAUTION:
- It is extremely important to wear protective goggles and clothing to prevent refrigerant from contacting skin and eyes.
- If R-134a refrigerant does enter the eyes, it is best to rinse them with a few drops of sterile mineral oil and plenty of cold water. Contact a physician even if irritation ceases.

Do not expose R-134a refrigerant to temperatures above 40°C (104°F) as pressure may increase beyond system or container capacity. It is also important to keep R-134a containers upright while charging the A/C system to prevent the liquid portion of the refrigerant from entering the system.

Do not allow R-134a refrigerant to come into contact with finished or bright metal surfaces. The metal will tarnish and, if exposed to moisture, corrode.
