Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection


IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (INCLUDING IGNITOR)

Inspection
1) Disconnect negative cable at battery.
2) Disconnect high-tension cords from ignition coil assembly.





3) Measure secondary coil for resistance.

Secondary coil resistance : 20.4-27.6 K ohms at 20°C, 68°F

If resistance is out of specification, replace ignition coil assembly.
4) Disconnect connector from ignition coil assembly.
5) Remove ignition coil assembly.





6) Connect positive terminal of ohmmeter to terminal "3" of ignition coil assembly and negative terminal to terminal "1".
7) Check continuity between terminals "3" and "1" with about 1.5V dry cell battery connected to terminals "3" and "2" and also not connected.

Dry cell battery not connected : No continuity

Dry cell battery connected : Continuity

If check result is not satisfactory, replace ignition coil assembly.
