Ignition Coil: Service and Repair





IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (INCLUDING IGNITOR)

REMOVAL
1) Disconnect ignition coil coupler.
2) Disconnect high-tension cord from ignition coil assembly.
3) Remove ignition coil bolts, and then pull out ignition coil assembly.






INSPECTION
1) Measure secondary coil for resistance. Secondary coil resistance: 8.5k - 11.5k ohms at 20°C, 68°F
- If resistance is out of specification, replace ignition coil assembly.






2) Connect positive terminal of ohmmeter to terminal "3" of ignition coil assembly and negative terminal to terminal "1".
3) Check continuity between terminals "3" and "1" with about 1.5 V dry cell battery connected to terminals "3" and "2" and also not connected.
- Dry cell battery not connected: No continuity Dry cell battery connected : Continuity
- If check result is not satisfactory, replace ignition coil assembly.





INSTALLATION
1) Install ignition coil assembly.
2) Tighten ignition coil bolts, and then connect ignition coil coupler.
3) Install high-tension cord to ignition coil assembly while gripping its cap.
