Instrument Cluster / Carrier: Description and Operation

Combination Meter Description

Combination meter includes control unit (CPU) that controls each of meters and indicators.

Control unit (CPU) in combination meter uses signals (information) sent from each control module by CAN communication to control speedometer, tachometer, ECT meter warning light and indicator light (other than air bag warning light, EPS warning light (if equipped), low fuel warning light, high beam indicator light and turn signal indicator light).

For more information on CAN communication data for combination meter, refer to Description and Operation CAN Communication System Description.

Speedometer

ECM calculates vehicle speed using signal from wheel speed sensor and sends vehicle speed signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, control unit (CPU) in combination meter drives speedometer based on vehicle speed signal.

Tachometer

ECM calculates engine speed using signal from CKP sensor and sends engine speed signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, control unit (CPU) in combination meter drives tachometer based on engine speed signal.

ECT Meter

ECM calculates engine coolant temperature using signal from ECT sensor and sends engine coolant temperature signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, control unit (CPU) in combination meter drives ECT meter based on engine coolant temperature signal.

Fuel Meter

- Fuel level sensor sends fuel level signal to combination meter. Using this fuel level signal, control unit (CPU) in combination meter calculates current fuel level and drives fuel meter.
- When remaining fuel is less than about 7.5 liters (15.85/13.20 US/Imp. pt.) (2WD model) or 6.8 liters (14.37/11.97 US/Imp. pt.) (4WD model), low fuel warning light lights up.

Information Display (LCD)

Information display indicates the following information on each display window area.

Shift position (CVT model)

TCM sends CVT shift position signal through CAN communication to combination meter.

Fuel consumption

Instantaneous fuel consumption: (MPG, L/100 km or km/L)

Average fuel consumption: "AVG" (MPG, L/100 km or km/L)

- Information display can indicate "Instantaneous fuel consumption" and "average fuel consumption" at the same time.
- Control unit (CPU) in combination meter calculates fuel consumption using running distance during a certain period of time and fuel consumption signal sent from ECM through CAN communication to combination meter.

Driving range "RANGE" (MI or km)

Control unit (CPU) in combination meter calculates driving range using remaining fuel, running distance during a certain period of time and fuel consumption signal from ECM through CAN communication to combination meter.

Outside air temperature

- BCM calculates outside air temperature using signal from outside air temperature sensor and sends outside air temperature signal through CAN communication to combination meter.
- Display range of outside air temperature is from -30 °C (-22 °F) to 50 °C (122 °F). When ignition switch is turned on, "-- °C (-- °F)" appears on LCD until outside air temperature signal is received. Also, there is freezing mark (1) which warns driver of frozen road surface.

NOTE:
- Freezing mark (1) turns on when outside air temperature drops lower than 3 °C (37.4 °F) and turns off when it rises to 5 °C (41 °F).)
- Displayed valve is not changed when vehicle is at stop or running at lower than 30 km/h (19 mile/h) even if outside air temperature rises.

Odometer, trip meter, fuel consumption and illumination control

Information display can indicate can display odometer, trip meter "A", trip meter "B", instantaneous fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, driving range and outside air temperature.

Information display can be controlled illumination control level individually with lighting switch is at ON and OFF position.

For the display mode change method, refer to the following.

NOTE:

*: Initial setting.

**: If MODE/ILL knob is not operated for 5 seconds or longer, the illumination control function will be cancelled automatically.

Self Warning Function

Combination meter has self warning function to warn any of troubles listed below when it detects such trouble.

Warning Buzzer

When all conditions of each of following functions are fulfilled, BCM sends buzzer request signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, combination meter makes warning buzzer sound based on buzzer request signal.

CVT reverse warning function (if equipped)

- Ignition switch ON
- Shift selector is in "R" position

Key reminder function

- Ignition switch OFF
- Ignition key is inserted to ignition key cylinder
- Driver side door open

Lights ON reminder function

- Lighting switch is "CLEARANCE" or "HEAD" position
- Ignition key is not inserted to ignition key cylinder
- Driver side door open

Seat belt reminder function

Refer to Description and Operation Seat Belt Construction.
