Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model)

Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model)

NOTE:

Brake fluid is extremely damaging to painted surfaces.

If brake fluid contacts a painted surface, immediately wipe it off and flush the surface thoroughly with water.

Removal

1) Hoist vehicle and remove rear wheel.
2) Remove brake drum and rear brake shoes.
3) Disconnect brake pipe flare nut (1) from wheel cylinder (3) and put bleeder plug cap (4) onto pipe (2) to prevent fluid from spilling.

4) Remove wheel speed sensor (1).
5) Remove brake back plate and rear wheel hub from rear axle.

NOTE:
The rear hub bolts are pre-coated with friction stabilizer. If these bolts are reused, they may work loose.

Be sure to replace the rear hub bolts with new ones whenever they are removed.

6) Remove wheel stud bolts (1) with copper hammer or hydraulic press.

NOTE:
Removing the hub bolts will break the rotation preventing projections on the hub bolts.

Avoid removing the hub bolts unless their replacement is absolutely necessary. If the hub bolts are removed, never reuse the bolts. Replace them with new bolts.

Installation

1) Insert wheel stud bolt (1) in hub hole. Rotate wheel stud bolt slowly to assure that serrations are aligned with those made by original bolt.

2) Install brake back plate, rear wheel hub and new rear hub bolts and then tighten rear hub bolts to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Rear hub bolt (a): 82 Nm (8.4 kgf-m, 60.5 lbf-ft)

3) Install wheel speed sensor (1) and tighten wheel speed sensor bolt to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Wheel speed sensor bolt (b): 11 Nm (1.1 kgf-m, 8.0 lbf-ft)

4) Connect brake pipe (1) to wheel cylinder and tighten brake pipe flare nut to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Brake pipe flare nut (a): 16 Nm (1.6 kgf-m, 11.5 lbf-ft)

5) Install brake drum referring to Step 1) and 2) of "Installation" under Rear Brake Drum Removal and Installation Rear Brake Drum Removal and Installation:Drum.
6) Fill reservoir with brake fluid and bleed brake system. For bleeding operation referring to Service and Repair Air Bleeding of Brake System.
7) Install wheel and tighten wheel nuts to specified torque referring to Removal and Replacement Wheel (with Tire) Removal and Installation.
8) Adjust parking brake cable. For adjustment, refer to Adjustments Parking Brake Inspection and Adjustment.
9) Check to ensure that brake drum is free from dragging and proper braking is obtained.
10) Perform brake test (foot brake and parking brake).
11) Check each installed part for fluid leakage.
