Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Connect timing light to engine.

2. Disconnect and plug the hose from the vacuum advancer 2nd stage as shown.
3. Timing should be 5° BTDC at 950 rpm (900 rpm on Canadian models). Adjust as necessary.

4. To adjust, loosen the distributor hold down bolt and slowly turn the distributor until the timing mark indicates 5° BTDC.
5. When done, torque the distributor hold down bolt to 10 - 16 Nm (8 - 11 ft.lbs). Recheck timing and verify it is still at spec.

6. Reconnect the hose to the vacuum advancer sub-diaphragm as shown and make sure the timing advances.
7. Disconnect and remove the timing light.
