Engine - V-Ribbed Drive Belt Precautions

TITLE V-RIBBED DRIVE BELTS

From 1983, Corolla, Tercel and Camry engines are equipped with V-ribbed type drive belts. V-ribbed belts offer several advantages over conventional V-belts:
^ Longer life: V-ribbed belts are thin and thus have excellent bendability to resist cracking.

^ Improved tension retention: V-ribbed belts have less deformation, wear and elongation.

^ Less engine power loss: V-ribbed belts, being thinner, have less bending loss.

Particular attention should be paid to the following when servicing V-ribbed belts to ensure they perform as designed.

1. Pulley Alignment

Make sure to verify that the V-ribbed belt is fitted properly in the pulley groove.

Take extra care to ensure that the belt is fitted correctly on the crankshaft pulley, as it is difficult to see.

2. Belt Tension

Since the feeling of tension differs between V-ribbed belts and conventional V-belt, a tension gauge should be used to adjust the V-ribbed belt tension.
NOTES: 1) "New belt" refers to a brand new belt which has never been used.
2) "Used belt" refers to a belt which has been used on a running engine for 5 minutes or more.

CAUTION: 1) Excessive tension will cause damage to belt and pulley.
2) Insufficient tension will cause belt to slip, squeal and overheat.
