Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Connect a timing light to the engine.
2. Start the engine and let it idle.

3. Short terminals T and E1 of the check connector. Engine rpm will rise to 1,000 - 1,300 for approx. 5 seconds, do not continue until the idle returns to the 600 - 800 rpm range.

4. Using the timing light, slowly turn the distributor until the timing mark on the crank pulley is aligned with the 10° BTDC mark. Torque distributor bolts to 13 Nm (9 ft.lbs) and check that timing is still at spec.
5. Remove jumper wire from check connector.
6. Check that ignition timing advances to approx. 13° - 22° BTDC.
