Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair

OXYGEN SENSOR REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT:

1. Allow the exhaust system and the Oxygen Sensor to cool down before attempting removal.
2. Disconnect the sensor wire connector.
3. Unbolt the sensor, taking care NOT to break the mounting studs.

NOTE: DO NOT use penetrating lubricant to loosen rusted mounting nuts unless absolutely necessary. The silicone in the lubricant will contaminate the new sensor, if it comes in contact with the sensor tip.

4. Remove the Oxygen Sensor and gasket from the mounting flange.
5. Always install the Oxygen Sensor using a new base gasket.
6. Torque the mounting nuts evenly to 14 ft.lbs. (20 N-m).
7. Reconnect the wire connector.
