Basic Inspection

PRELIMINARY CHECK

1. CHECK FLUID LEVEL.
- Drive the vehicle so that the engine and transaxle are at normal operating temperature.

Normal fluid operating temp. .. 70° - 80°C (158° - 176°F)

- Use the COOL position on the dipstick only as a rough reference when the fluid is replaced or the engine does not run.



- Park the vehicle on a level surface, set the parking brake.
- With the engine idling and the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever into each gear from the P position to L position smoothly and return to P position.
- Pull out the transaxle dipstick and wipe it clean.
- Push it back fully into the pipe.



- Pull it out and check that the fluid level is in the HOT range.
- If the level is at the low side of the hot range add fluid.

NOTICE: Do Not Overfill.

Fluid Type: ATF DEXRON(R) II

2. CHECK FLUID CONDITION.
- If the fluid smells burnt or is black, replace it.

3. REPLACE ATF.



- Remove the drain plug, gasket and drain the fluid.
- Install a new gasket and the drain plug securely.



- Add new fluid through the filler pipe.

- Fluid type: .... ATF DEXRON(R) II

- Dry fill: ...... 8.0 liters (8.5 US qts)

- Drain and refill: .. 3.3 liters (3.5 US qts)


- Start the engine and shift the selector into all positions from P through L position and then shift into P position.



- With the engine idling, check the fluid level.
- Add fluid up to the COOL level on the dipstick.
- Check the fluid level with the normal fluid temperature 70° - 80°C (158° - 176°F) and add as necessary.

NOTICE: Do Not Overfill.

4. INSPECT AND ADJUST THROTTLE CABLE.
- Check that the throttle valve is fully closed.
- Check that the inner cable is not slack.



- Measure the distance between the outer cable end and stopper on the cable.

Standard distance:
Boot to cable stopper ... 0.0 - 1.0 mm (0.0 - 0.04 in)


- If the distance is not standard, adjust the cable by adjusting the nuts.

5. INSPECT AND ADJUST SHIFT CABLE.
- When shifting the shift lever from the N position to other positions, check that the lever can be shifted smoothly and accurately to each position and that the position indicator correctly indicates the position.
- If the indicator is not aligned with the correct position, carry out the following adjustment procedure:
- Remove the No.1 engine under cover.



- Loosen the nut on manual shift lever.
- Push the manual shift lever fully toward the right side of the vehicle.



- Return the lever 2 notches to NEUTRAL position.
- Set the shift lever to N position.
- While holding the lever lightly toward the R position side, tighten the swivel nut.
- Install the No.1 engine under cover.

6. ADJUST PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH.
- If the engine will start with the shift selector in any position other than N or P position, adjustment is required.
- Loosen the park/neutral position switch bolts and set the shift selector to the N position.



- Align the groove and neutral basic line.
- Hold in position and tighten the bolts.

Torque: .... 5.4 N.m (48 in.lb)

7. INSPECT IDLE SPEED.
- Refer to "Idle Speed" under Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.

Idle speed .... 750 ± 50 rpm
(In N position and air conditioner OFF)
