Disassembly and Assembly






DISASSEMBLY

NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. Remove the intermediate shaft.
a. Remove the bolt.





b. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft.
2. Remove the key cylinder illumination after removing the screw.
3. Remove the column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the two tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 4 to 5 mm (0.16 - 0.20 inch) drill, drill into the two bolts.





c. Using a screw extractor, remove the two bolts.
4. Remove main shaft assembly with bushing.
a. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the shaft assembly.
b. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap out the shaft assembly with the bushing from the column tube.

NOTICE: Take care not to drop the shaft assembly.

c. Remove the bushing from the shaft assembly.
d. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the shaft assembly.

INSPECTION

NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.





1. Inspect steering lock operation.
Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
2. If necessary, replace the key cylinder.
a. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.





b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder.
c. Install a new cylinder.

HINT: Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.

3. Inspect the key unlock warning switch.
4. If necessary, replace the key unlock warning switch.
a. Remove the two screws.
b. Install a new switch with the two screws.
5. If the vehicle came with an automatic transmission inspect the key interlock solenoid
6. If the vehicle came with an automatic transmission and, if necessary, replace key interlock solenoid by first removing the two old screws and then installing a new solenoid with the two screws.
7. Inspect ignition switch.
8. If necessary, replace the ignition switch by first removing the two screws and then installing a new switch with the two screws.





9. Inspect bearing.
Check the bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise.
If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the column tube.

REASSEMBLY

NOTICE: When using a vice, do not overtighten.

1. Install the main shaft assembly.
a. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the shaft assembly.
b. Install the shaft assembly into the column tube.
c. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the shaft assembly.
2. Install bushing.
a. Coat the inside of a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.





b. Using the 09612 - 22011 SST, press in the bushing.





3. Install the column upper bracket and column upper clamp then tighten two new tapered-head bolts until the bolt head breaks off.
4. Install the key cylinder illumination by tightening the screw.
5. Install the intermediate shaft.
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft.
b. Tighten the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
