Removal

REMOVAL
1. Remove battery.
2. Remove engine hood.
3. Remove engine under covers.
4. Drain engine coolant.
5. Drain engine oil.
6. Drain transaxle oil.





7. Remove air cleaner cap.
a. Disconnect the connector, cord, cables and hoses:
1) Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector
2) High-tension cord from air cleaner hose
3) Accelerator cable from clamp
4) Cruise control actuator cable from clamps
5) Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose from air cleaner hose
6) California only: Air hose for idle-up from air cleaner hose
b. Disconnect the 4 clamps, and disconnect the air cleaner cap from the air cleaner case.
c. Loosen the hose clamp, and disconnect the air cleaner hose from the throttle body.
d. Remove the air cleaner cap and air cleaner hose assembly.





8. Remove air cleaner case.
a. Remove the air filter.
b. Disconnect the 2 engine wires from the clamps on the air cleaner case.
c. Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner case.





9. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body, cable bracket and clamps.
10. w/ Cruise Control System: Disconnect cruise control actuator from body bracket.
a. Disconnect the actuator connector.





b. Remove the 3 bolts, and disconnect the actuator from the body bracket.
11. Remove radiator assembly.
12. Disconnect connectors, wire, cable, cord, strap and hoses.
Disconnect the connectors, wire, cable, cord, strap and hoses:





1) Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor connector
2) MAP sensor wire from clamp on bracket
3) MAP sensor vacuum hose from gas filter on intake manifold
4) Brake booster vacuum hose from intake manifold





5) DLC1 from bracket
6) Engine wire protector from bracket





7) Igniter connector
8) Ignition coil connector
9) High-tension cord from ignition coil
10) Noise filter
11) Engine wire clamp from bracket Remove the 3 bolts, the ignition coil and igniter assembly, and disconnect the wire from the bracket.





12) Ground cable from body
13) Ground strap from body





14) Heater hose from water outlet
15) Heater hose from water bypass pipe





16) Fuel inlet hose from fuel filter
17) Fuel return hose from return pipe
18) Evaporative Emission (EVAP) hose from charcoal canister





13. Disconnect engine wire from engine compartment relay box.
a. Remove the 2 relay box covers.
b. Disconnect the 2 connectors.
14. Disconnect engine wire from cabin.
a. Remove these parts:
- Scuff plate
- Cowl side trim
- Lower instrument panel finish panel

b. Take out the front side of the floor carpet.





c. Disconnect the wire and connectors:
1) Engine wire from clamp on Engine Control Module (ECM) bracket
2) 3 ECM connectors
3) Circuit opening relay connector
4) 3 connectors from connectors on bracket
5) A/C amplifier connector





d. Disconnect the wire clamp from the bracket.
e. Remove the 2 nuts holding the engine wire retainer to the cowl panel.
f. Pull out the engine wire from the cabin.





15. Remove front exhaust pipe.
a. Remove the 2 bolts holding the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust pipe support bracket.
b. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the rear Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).
c. Using a 14 mm deep socket wrench, remove the 3 nuts holding the front exhaust pipe to the front TWC.
d. Remove the front exhaust pipe and 2 gaskets.
16. Remove drive shafts.





17. Remove generator drive belt.
a. Loosen the adjusting lock bolt (w/ A/C), pivot bolt and adjusting bolt.
b. Remove the drive belt.





18. Disconnect A/C compressor from engine.
a. Disconnect the A/C compressor connector.
b. Remove the 3 bolts, and disconnect the A/C compressor from the engine.

HINT: Suspend the A/C compressor securely.

19. Disconnect Power Steering (PS) pump from engine.





a. Disconnect the 2 air hoses from the air tube.





b. Loosen the pivot bolt and adjusting bolt.
c. Remove the drive belt.





d. Remove the 4 bolts, and disconnect the PS pump from the engine.

HINT: Suspend the PS pump securely.





20. M/T: Remove starter.
a. Disconnect the starter connector.
b. Remove the nut, and disconnect the starter cable.
c. Remove the 2 bolts.
d. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and engine wire brackets from the starter.
e. Remove the starter.





21. M/T: Disconnect clutch release cylinder from transaxle.
a. Disconnect the back-up light switch connector.
b. Remove the clamp, and disconnect the tube from the bracket.
c. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the bracket from the transaxle.
d. Remove the clamp bolt, and disconnect the tube from the transaxle.
e. Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the release cylinder from the transaxle.





22. Disconnect transaxle control cable(s) from transaxle.





23. A/T: Disconnect transaxle control cable from engine mounting center member.
Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the control cable from the center member.





24. Remove exhaust pipe support bracket.
Remove the 2 bolts, nut and support bracket.





25. Remove engine mounting center member.
a. Remove the 2 dust covers from the rear side of the center member.
b. Disconnect the A/C pipe from the bracket.
c. Remove the bolt and nut holding the front engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
d. Remove the bolt holding the rear engine mounting bracket to the mounting insulator.
e. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts holding the rear engine mounting insulator to the front suspension member.
f. Remove the 2 bolts (A/T) or 3 bolts (M/T) and rear engine mounting bracket.
g. Remove the 2 bolts holding the center member to the body, and remove the center member and rear engine mounting insulator.
26. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.





a. Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers.





b. Remove the 2 nuts and bolt (M/T) or 2 bolts (A/T), and disconnect the LH engine mounting bracket from the mounting insulator.
c. Remove the through bolt and LH engine mounting insulator.





d. Disconnect the ground strap connector.
e. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and disconnect the RH engine mounting bracket from the mounting insulator.





f. Lift the engine out of the vehicle slowly and carefully.

HINT: Make sure the engine is clear of all wiring, hoses and cables.

g. Place the engine and transaxle assembly onto the stand.
27. Remove drive shaft bearing bracket.
Remove the 3 bolts and bearing bracket.





28. A/T: Disconnect A/T throttle cable from throttle body and intake manifold.
a. Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body.
b. Disconnect the throttle cable from the cable bracket.
c. Disconnect the throttle cable from the clamps on the intake manifold.





29. Disconnect connectors and cable.
Disconnect the connectors and cable:
1) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
2) A/T: Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector
3) A/T: 2 solenoid connectors
4) Ground cable





30. A/T: Remove starter.
a. Disconnect the starter connector.
b. Remove the nut, and disconnect the starter cable.
c. Remove the 2 bolts.
d. Disconnect the oxygen sensor and engine wire brackets from the starter.
e. Remove the starter.





31. Remove LH exhaust manifold stay.
Remove the bolt, nut and exhaust manifold stay.





32. Remove NO.2 intake manifold stay.
Remove the bolt, nut and intake manifold stay.





33. Remove rear end plate stiffener.
Remove the 6 bolts and plate stiffener.





34. A/T: Remove torque converter clutch bolts.
a. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to gain access to each bolt.
b. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench, and remove the 6 bolts.





35. Remove transaxle.
a. Remove the 6 bolts, and disconnect the ground strap from the transaxle.
b. Remove the transaxle together with the torque converter clutch (A/T) from the engine.





36. Remove clutch cover and disc.
Remove the 6 bolts, clutch cover and disc.





37. M/T: Remove flywheel.
Remove the 8 bolts and flywheel.
38. A/T: Remove drive plate.
Remove the 8 bolts, front plate, drive plate and rear spacer.
39. Remove rear end plate.
Remove the bolt and end plate.
