Introduction

Some 2002 model year RAV4 vehicles may exhibit a M.I.L. "ON" with DTC P0442 (Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction [Small Leak]) and/or DTC P0440 (Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction). This may be due to slight damage to the Fuel Tank Vent Hose during the assembly process.

^ 2002 model year RAV4 vehicles assembled at the Shokai assembly plant Vehicles (11th digit on the VIN is 6) produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown below.

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty *:

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date. For California specification vehicles registered and operated in California, Massachusetts or Vermont, this repair is covered under the California emissions warranty, which is 36 months or 50,000, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

1. Pressure test the EVAP system to confirm leak from system using the EVAP Pressure Tester (P/N 00002-6872A). (Follow instructions on EVAP Pressure Tester.)





2. Examine the Fuel Tank Vent Hose Assembly very closely for a small cut in the 4th ribbed section from the charcoal canister (see illustration).

3. If cut is present, replace the Fuel Tank Vent Hose Assembly (P/N 77404-42010).

4. If no damage is found, perform EVAP system diagnostics for P0440 in the 2002 RAV4 Repair Manual, Volume 1, page DI-74.
