Applicability
Introduction
Some RAV4 vehicles with manual air conditioning Systems may exhibit a condition where the HVAC system intermittently blows warm air from the vents with the A/C on.
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1479 (Flow Sensor Circuit) may be stored in the A/C system as a current code. A malfunctioning A/C compressor flow sensor may cause this condition. Follow the procedure in this TSB to repair the vehicle.
NOTE
Manual A/C Systems do not have the ability to store history DTCs, therefore DTC B1479 may not be present even when the flow sensor is malfunctioning.
Production Change Information
This TSB applies to the following RAV4 vehicles with 2AR-FE engines and Manual Air Conditioning systems:
^ All 2009 TMMC-built vehicles.
^ 2009 Tahara/Shokki-built vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown.

Repair Procedure
1. Using Techstream inspect the A/C system flow sensor voltage DURING the inoperative condition.
NOTE
The A/C flow sensor is malfunctioning when a voltage value between 0.7 and 4.2 V does NOT change for more than 8.0 minutes with the A/C ON. After 8 minutes, DTC B1479 may be current in the A/C system.
^ If the flow sensor value does NOT change when switching the A/C system/blower ON and OFF and is stuck between 0.7 and 4.0 V go to step 2.
^ If the flow sensor voltage is normal this TSB does NOT apply. Refer to the problem symptoms table of the Repair Manual.
Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model year RAV4 Repair Manual:
2009 / 2010 RAV4:
Vehicle Interior - Heating/Air Conditioning - "Air Conditioning: Air Conditioning System: (for Manual Air Conditioning System) Problem Symptoms Table"
2. Check the harness and connector (A/C compressor flow sensor - A/C amplifier).
A. Disconnect the B66 flow sensor connector.
B. Disconnect the E36 amplifier connector.
C. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table.
3. Remove and replace the A/C compressor.
Refer to TIS applicable model year RAV4 Repair Manual:
^ 2009 RAV4:
Vehicle Interior - Heating/Air Conditioning - "Air Conditioning: Compressor and Pulley (for 2AR-FE): Removal / Installation"
^ 2010 RAV4:
Vehicle Interior - Heating/Air Conditioning - "Air Conditioning: Compressor (for 2AR-FE): Removal / Installation"
4. Clear all DTCs and confirm the A/C system has returned to proper operation.
