U241E AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE: AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY: INSTALLATION

1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the torque converter clutch Testing and Inspection.

2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY





(a) Engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

(b) Engage the splines of the stator shaft and the stator while turning the torque converter clutch.





HINT
If the stator shaft splines are difficult to engage with the stator splines, move the torque converter clutch back approximately 10 mm (0.394 in.) and engage the splines while rotating the torque converter clutch.

(c) Turn the torque converter clutch to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter clutch.





(d) Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the transaxle fitting surface of the engine *1 and the converter fitting surface of the drive plate *2. (#)

NOTICE:
Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.





(e) Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration. Check that B is greater than A (measured in step (#)).





Standard dimension:

A + 1.0 mm (0.0394 in.) or more

NOTICE:
* Make sure to deduct the thickness of the straightedge.
* If the transaxle is installed to the engine with the torque converter clutch not sufficiently inserted, the torque converter clutch may be damaged.
3. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET





(a) Install the cable bracket with the 2 bolts.

Torque : 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf)

4. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY





(a) Install the filler tube with the bolt.

Torque : 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 in-lbf)

(b) Install the ATF dipstick.

5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY





(a) Apply clutch spline grease to the round of the crankshaft contact surface with the torque converter centerpiece.

Clutch splice grease:

Toyota Genuine Clutch Splice Grease or equivalent

Maximum spread
About 1 g (0.353 oz)

(b) Install the automatic transaxle with the 5 upper side mounting bolts to the engine.





Torque : 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf for bolt A)

Torque : 46 Nm (469 kgf-cm, 34 ft-lbf for bolt B)

NOTICE:
Confirm that 2 knock pins are on the transaxle fitted surface of the engine block before the transaxle installation.

(c) Install the 4 lower side mounting bolts.

Torque : 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf)





(d) Apply a few drops of adhesive to 2or 3 threads of the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts tip.





Adhesive:

Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324,

Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

(e) Install the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.





Torque : 41 Nm (418 kgf-cm, 30 ft-lbf)

NOTICE:
Install the black colored bolt first, and then the silver colored 5 bolts.

(f) Install the flywheel housing under cover.

6. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH





(a) Install the mounting bracket with the 3 bolts.

Torque : 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf)

7. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET FR





(a) Install the mounting bracket with the 4 bolts.

Torque : 64 Nm (657 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf for 14 mm head bolt)

Torque : 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf for 12 mm head bolt)

8. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET RR





(a) Install the mounting bracket with the 3 bolts.

Torque : 45 Nm (459 kgf-cm, 33 ft-lbf)

9. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER

(a) Install the oil cooler Installation.

10. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS





(a) Connect the wire harness clamps.

(b) Connect the speed sensor connectors.

(c) Connect the transaxle wire connector.

(d) Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

11. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY





(a) Install the starter with the 2 bolts.

Torque : 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf)

(b) Connect the starter wire with the nut.

Torque : 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft-lbf)





(c) Connect the starter connector.

(d) Install the terminal nut and cover the nut with the cap.

Torque : 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft-lbf)

12. INSTALL ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE

(a) Install the engine with transaxle Installation.

13. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID

Fluid type:

Toyota Genuine ATF WS or Equivalent

14. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID

(a) Inspect the automatic transaxle fluid Procedures.

15. PERFORM RESET MEMORY

(a) Perform the RESET MEMORY procedures (A/T initialization) Programming and Relearning.
