Separating/Reattaching Engine/Transaxle

SEPARATING ENGINE AND TRANSAXLE:

Torque Converter To Drive Plate Bolts:

- Both the engine and the transaxle should be supported. On cars with automatic transmission, remove the three bolts holding the torque converter to the drive plate. These bolts are near the outside diameter of the torque converter, and are accessible from the bottom as shown in the image.

Cover Plate:

- On all models, remove the cover plate shown in the image, and remove the bolts which hold the transaxle to the engine. Separate the engine and transaxle using care not to place any strain on the transmission mainshaft.

CAUTION:
- On models with automatic transmission, be sure that the drive plate separates cleanly from the torque converter without pulling the torque converter off its support. As soon as the engine and transaxle are separated, install a bar across the open bellhousing to keep the torque converter from falling.

- On models with manual transmission, at no time should the weight of either the engine or the transaxle be supported by the transmission mainshaft. If it is, the clutch, the clutch pushrod, or the mainshaft may be damaged.
