Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

Fig. 2 Exploded View of Girling Single Piston w/Dual Mounting Bolts Caliper, Rear:

Refer to Fig. 2, when overhauling caliper.
1. Place wooden block between caliper piston and caliper housing, then apply compressed air to brake line bore to force piston from housing.
2. Remove piston seal from caliper piston bore using a plastic rod. If either caliper piston or caliper piston bore is corroded, pitted or scored, affected part must be replaced.
3. Slide dust cap onto piston, then lubricate piston and caliper piston bore lightly with a suitable brake cylinder paste.
4. Install piston into caliper bore and insert inner lip of dust cap into groove on caliper.
5. Open bleeder screw, then press caliper piston into caliper as far as possible, ensuring outer lip of dust cap slips into groove in piston.
