Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove bolts fastening top of transmission to engine.
3. Remove rear skid plate from under engine and transmission.

Final Drive Mount:

2G4. Loosen front final drive mounting bolt (arrow).

CAUTION Do NOT remove bolt.

Final Drive Mounting Bracket:

5. Loosen side bolts of front final drive mounting bracket (arrow).

CAUTION Do NOT remove bolts.

6. Remove bolts fastening driveshaft to transmission flange, then tie shaft aside.

Removing Axle Shaft Bolts:

7. Remove lefthand side axle shaft bolts (lower arrow), and remove shaft from the transmission.
8. Remove hydraulic clutch line bracket from transmission (center arrow).

CAUTION Do NOT disconnect hydraulic line.

9. Remove clutch slave cylinder from bracket on transmission (upper arrow), then hang cylinder from body with wire.
10. Disconnect back-up light electrical connector.
11. Remove righthand side axle shaft from transmission.

Removing Shift Linkage:

12. Remove shift linkage from transmission (arrows).
13. On models with rear differential lock, remove vacuum hoses from lock servo, then disconnect indicator light switch wiring.
14. Remove ground cable from body.
15. Support transmission with VAG 1383 or equivalent.

Front Transmission Bracket:

16. Remove front transmission bracket (arrow), then lower front of transmission approximately 15 cm (6 in) at driveshaft flange.
17. Disconnect starter cables.
18. Remove vent hose.

Removing Transmission With Special Tool:

19. Support engine using tool VW 785/1B or equivalent.
20. Remove lower engine to transmission attaching bolts.

Removing Transmission With Special Tool:

21. Pull transmission from engine guides, then remove from vehicle.
