Ignition Lock: Service and Repair

STEERING LOCK HOUSING, REMOVING/INSTALLING





This is an exploded view of the steering wheel, steering lock housing and steering column switches. The turn signal and wiper/washer switches mount to the ignition/steering lock housing with three screws. The switches can be replaced individually if necessary, but individual pants for repair are not available.

The ignition switch and lock cylinder also mount to the steering column housing, which in turn clamps to the steering column tube. The clearance between the steering column switches and the steering wheel can be adjusted by altering the position of the flange tube on the steering gear pinion.


1. Remove the steering wheel.
2. Remove the three screws that hold the turn signal and windshield wiper switch assemblies to the steering column housing. Disconnect the harness connectors and remove the switches.
3. Remove the two screws securing the steering column switch trim and remove the lower half of the trim.
4. Pry off the spring retainer using a flat blade screwdriver and remove the spring.
5. Insert and turn the ignition key to unlock the steering column.
6. Remove the socket head bolt that clamps the steering lock housing to the steering column tube, and disconnect the wiring at the ignition switch. Remove the steering lock housing and the upper half of the steering column switch trim.
7. Remove the screw that holds the ignition switch to the steering lock housing and remove the switch.


Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the ignition/steering lock clamping bolt to 7 Nm (62 in. lb.). Install a new spring retainer using Volkswagen special tool 419 or a length of tubing. The spring retainer must be installed concave side down and seated 50 mm from the end of the steering shaft.
