Ignition Hall Effect Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Ignition Testing:

1. With the ignition "OFF", remove the harness connector at the ignition distributor.
2. Switch the ignition "ON" and measure the voltage between the two outer terminals of the harness connector.

^ The correct measurement should be at least 5 volts.

If the measurement is incorrect check the harness and the knock sensor control unit. Repair or replace as necessary.
If the measurement is correct continue with step 3.

Testing The Hall Sender:

3. Turn the ignition switch "OFF", reinstall the distributor harness connector, and peel back the rubber boot.
4. Connect a high impedance LED test light between the positive battery terminal and the center terminal of the ignition distributor harness connector.
5. Disconnect the high tension ignition lead from the distributor and ground it.
6. With the ignition switch, crank the engine.

^ The LED test light should flicker.

If the light does not flicker the Hall sender or the harness connection is defective.
