Automatic Transmission

Throttle Valve Potentiometer:





1. Remove the throttle switch heat shield.

Special Tool:





2. With the ignition "OFF", disconnect the throttle switch connector and connect VW 1501 or equivalent to the switch plug.

3. Connect a suitable volt/ohm meter between terminal 1 and 2 of the test harness. Set the volt/ohm meter to ohms.

IDLE SWITCH CHECK

4. Close the throttle fully.

^ The measurement should be less than 0.5 ohms (continuity).

5. Open the throttle (off idle).

^ The measurement should be infinite ohms (no continuity).


FULL THROTTLE SWITCH CHECK

6. Connect the volt/ohm meter between terminal 2 and 3 of the test harness.

7. Close the throttle fully.

^ The measurement should be infinite ohms (no continuity).

8. Open the throttle fully.

^ The measurement should be less than 0.5 ohms (continuity).

9. If the throttle switch is properly adjusted and the correct measurements are not obtained the throttle switch is defective. Replace the throttle switch.

NOTE: Vehicles produced prior to March 1990, may not have the full throttle portion of the switch connected.
