Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Starter motor, removing/installing

- disconnect batt9ry ground cable




- support engine/gearbox assembly using engine support 10-222A with leg set 10-222A/1

NOTE: Starter motor installation requires precise alignment of the engine, etc. The following removal procedure will cause these components to shift position if the engine support is NOT used.




- disconnect terminal 50 from starter switch then pull wire out of retainer (arrow)
- when installing; push wires back into retainer clip (arrow)




- unclip and disconnect harness connector (arrow)




- disconnect wire from Generator B+ and battery positive to starter terminal 30 (arrows)
- when installing; tighten starter solenoid nut to 15 Nm (11 ft lb) (lower arrow)
- when installing; tighten ground connection nut (upper arrow) to 10 Nm (7 ft lb)




- remove nut from mounting bolt (arrow)
- when installing; tighten nut (arrow) to: 60 Nm (44 ft lb)




- remove mounting bolt (arrow) and remove starter motor
- when installing; tighten mounting bolt (arrow) to: 60 Nm (44 ft lb)

NOTE: Installation is reverse of removal procedure.
