Throttle Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection
CHECKING THROTTLE POSITION SENSORNOTE: If the Throttle Position (TP) sensor G69 has been removed, re-installed or replaced, then the Transmission Control Module (TCM) J217 and the Throttle Position sensor must be matched to one another.
Special Tools
^ Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1.
^ Fluke 83 multimeter.
^ VW 1594 adaptor kit.
Checking Voltage Supply
- Disconnect 3-pin Throttle Position sensor harness connector.
- Connect multimeter between outer terminals of harness connector using jumper wires from the VW 1594 adaptor kit.
- Switch ON ignition.
^ Specification: Approx. 5 Volts
- If specifications not obtained:
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Perform electrical check. Refer to Diagnostic Charts / VAG 1598 Pin Out Box / Electrical Checks / Test Step 17. Testing and Inspection
- If necessary Replace Engine Control Module (ECM) J169.
Functional Check
- Check using VAG 1551 Scan Tool in Function 08, "Read measuring value block", with ignition switched ON.
Test Conditions
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool connected and Function 08: "Read measuring value block" selected (Display group number 03).
^ Display will appear as shown: (1 to 4 = Display channels)
Read measuring value block 3 -->

NOTE: If something different is displayed, refer to Scan Tool operating instructions.
- Check throttle angle on idle speed stop, (display channel 3).
^ Specification: 0 to 5 angle°
- Slowly open throttle to wide open position and observe the angle displayed in display channel 3.
NOTE: The displayed value must increase uniformly over the complete range.
- Check throttle angle at the wide open position stop (Display channel 3).
^ Specification: 80 to 90 angle°
- Press --> button.
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06: "End data transfer".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- If specifications are not obtained or do not increase uniformly:
- Perform electrical check. Refer to Diagnostic Charts / VAG 1598 Pin Out Box / Electrical Checks / Test Step 17. Testing and Inspection
- Replace Throttle Position sensor G69 if necessary.
