Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool (or VAG 1552) with cable VAG 1551/3
- VAG 1788/10 Engine speed adjuster
Test conditions
- Vehicle stationary
- On vehicles with automatic transmission selector lever in "P" or "N" position
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heating must be switched off
- Intake air temperature less than 60 degree C display group 04, display zone 4
- Coolant temperature must be min. 80 degree C display group 04, display zone 3
Work sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool ((VAG 1552). Switch ignition on and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. (Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module [1][2][3]Connecting VAG Scan Tool 1551/1552).
Work step 1: Check DTC Memory
Indicated on display

Select function XX
- Press keys 0 and 2 for function "Check DTC Memory" and confirm entry with Q key.
The number of DTCs stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be shown on the display.
X DTC recognized
If a DTC is stored:
- Correct malfunctions printed out using DTC table:
SAE P0 codes P0102
SAE P1 codes P1114
If no DTC is stored:
- Press -> key.
Work step 2: Erase DTC Memory
Indicated on display:

- Press keys 0 and 5 for the function "Erase DTC Memory" and confirm entry with Q key.
NOTE: The readiness code is reset or erased each time the DTC memory is erased.

NOTE: If the ignition is switched off between "Check DTC Memory" and "Erase DTC Memory" the DTC memory will not be erased.
- Press -> key.
Work step 3: Matching throttle valve control module to engine control module

- Terminate engine basic setting at earliest after 30 seconds by pressing the -> key.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check throttle valve control module. Throttle Valve Control Module, Checking
If the display indicates as described:
- Start engine and run at idling speed.
NOTE: During the work sequence the engine must not be switched off.
Work step 4: Temperature check

Specification: 5 to 90 degree C
- Read Intake Air Temperature (IAT) value in display field 4.
Specification: maximum 60 degree C
If indications resemble description:
- Start engine and run at idle.
NOTE: Engine must not be shut off again during work sequence.
- Press -> key.
Work step 5: Diagnosis of leak detection system

- Run engine for 30 seconds at idle and check specifications:
If diagnostic is initiated from Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, display in display field 4 changes from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Allow engine to continue running at idle until "Syst. OK." is displayed in display field 4.
NOTE:
- If the display in display field 4 changes from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during diagnostic, and "Abort" is displayed in display field 2, repeat EVAP system/fuel tank leak detection.
- Briefly open the fuel filler cap before repeating the diagnostic.
If the specified values are not attained:
- Check DTC memory DTC Memory Checking and Erasing.
If the specified values are attained:
- Press C key.
Work step 6: EVAP system diagnosis (tank venting system)

When the diagnosis is initiated by the engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Run engine at idling speed until specification:
"TVV OK" is displayed in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC Memory DTC Memory Checking and Erasing.
If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.
Work step 7: Secondary air system diagnosis

- Press keys 0, 7 and 7 for "Display group number 77" and confirm entry with Q key.

If the diagnosis is initiated from the engine control module the display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Allow engine to continue running at idling speed until specification:
"Syst. OK" is displayed in display zone 4.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC Memory DTC Memory Checking and Erasing.
If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> key.
Work step 8: Oxygen sensor aging diagnosis (cycle duration monitor)

- Set an engine speed of 2200 to 2800 RPM with speed regulator VAG 1788/10.
- Maintain speed at 2200 to 2800 RPM until catalytic converter temperature in display zone 2 exceeds:
352 degree C.
NOTE: This process can take a few minutes.

NOTE: The Bits in display zone 2 are set to 1 first when the catalytic converter temperature exceeds 352 degree C (see display group 34, display zone 2).
Significance of 3 digit number block in display zones 1 and 2:
If the specifications are not obtained:
- Check DTC Memory DTC Memory Checking and Erasing.
If the specifications are obtained:
- Set an engine speed of 2200 to 2800 RPM with speed regulator VAG 1788/10:
- Press -> key.

The catalytic converter temperature in display zone 2 must be:
min. 352 degree C.
- Check time period in display zone 3:
Specification: max. 2.2 seconds
- Continue to maintain speed at 2200 to 2800 RPM until specification "B1-P1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If the specifications are not attained:
- Check DTC Memory DTC Memory Checking and Erasing.
If the specification is obtained:
- Press C key.
Work step 9: Catalyst diagnosis
NOTE: The diagnosis will only be terminated if the Oxygen sensor aging diagnosis is first successfully completed.

- Increase engine speed at 2800 to 3200 RPM until display in display zone 4 jumps from:
"Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- The catalytic converter temperature in display zone 2 must be:
min. 352 degree C.
- Check amplitude ratio in display zone 3:
Specification: max. 0.55
- Continue to maintain speed at 2800 to 3200 RPM until specification:
"Cat B1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
NOTE: The diagnosis of the catalytic converter takes approx. 100 seconds. If there is still no result in the display after 150 seconds, change the speed within the tolerance.
- Remove engine speed adjuster VAG 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.
- Press -> key.
- Press keys 0 and 6 for "End Output" function and confirm input with Q key.
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC Memory DTC Memory Checking and Erasing.
If the display indicates as described:
- Press -> key.
- Display readiness code Readiness Code Reading.
