Aging Check




Oxygen Sensor Aging, Oxygen Sensor Before Catalytic Converter, Checking

Special Tools and Equipment
- VAG1551 scan tool (or VAG1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG1551/3B cable

Test requirement
- Coolant temperature must be at least 85°C, See display group 04, display field 3

Function test
- Connect VAG1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Start engine and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01.

- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Press buttons -0-, -3- and -4- to select "Display group number 34". Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Depress brake pedal and hold down.
- Depress accelerator pedal until it is in Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position.


NOTE: The Engine Control Module (ECM) raises engine speed to between 2000 and 2300 RPM.


- Hold the RPM until the catalytic converter temperature in display field 2 over 350 °C climbs.
- Check specified values in display fields 1 through 4 during this.

If diagnostic is initiated by the Engine Control Module (ECM), the indication in display field 4 will jump from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue to hold brake and accelerator pedals in the depressed position, until display field 4 indicates the specified value "B1-S1 OK is indicated.
- Release brake and accelerator pedal.

If specified values are not obtained:
- Perform a road test to free the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) of any possible residue, and repeat the test.

Observe the safety precautions that apply to road tests.

If specified values are not obtained again:
- Replace Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) -G39- bank 1.
- Check DTC memory, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory was erased or the Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected from the continuous B+ supply, the readiness code must be re-generated. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Reading Readiness Code. Testing and Inspection Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Generating Readiness Code. Testing and Inspection
