Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory, Checking And Erasing

Special tools, and equipment
- Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 (or VAG 1552) with cable VAG 1551/3 or VAG 1551/1

NOTE: All functions which could previously be performed with VAG 1551/1552 can also be performed with Scan Tool VAS 5051. Scan Tool, connecting. Connecting VAS 5051 Scan Tool

Work sequence
- Connect Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) and with "Address word" 01 select ECM (with engine idling), Scan Tool, connecting. Connecting VAS 5051 Scan Tool)

Only when engine does not start:
- Turn on ignition.
- Switch on Scan Tool printer with print button. Indicator lamp in button must illuminate.

Indicated on display:

Select function XX

- Operate Scan Tool (ST) and follow information on display:
- Press buttons -0- and -2- for function "Check DTC memory" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Number of DTC stored or "No DTC recognized!" will be as shown.

X DTCs recognized!

If one or more DTC are stored:
Stored DTCs will be displayed and printed out one after another.

After stored DTCs have been printed out, display will appear as shown

- Eliminate the printed out DTC using the DTC table. Related Tests, Information and Procedures
- Afterwards erase fault memory. With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

If no fault is stored:
- Press -> button.

- Press buttons -0- and -6- for the function "End output" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Automatic Test Sequence

During test and assembly work DTCs can be recognized from other control modules like e.g. plug disconnected. Therefore, on completion DTC memory for all control modules must be check and erased, as follows:

- Press button -0- twice for address word "Automatic test sequence" and confirm entry with -Q- button. VAG 1551 transmits all known address words one after another.

When a control module answers with its identification the number of stored DTCs appears on display or "No DTC recognized" appears.

Any DTCs stored will be displayed one after another and printed out. VAG 1551 will transmit next address word.

Automatic test sequence has ended when the following is displayed:

VAG ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer*
2 - Blink code output*

* Appears alternately

- Erase all DTC memory, then road test.

Observe all safety measures during test drive. Technician Safety Information
- If the DTC was erased the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
- Check DTC memory for all control modules using "automatic test sequence".

If no DTC is stored:
- Press -> button.

- Press buttons -0- and -6- for "End output" and confirm with -Q- button.
- Switch ignition off.
