Section B - Fuel Removal
WARNING!Fire Hazard. Do not smoke, work near heaters or have anything in the area that could ignite the fuel or fumes.
BEFORE beginning repairs, the suction hose of an exhaust extraction system must be located near the fuel tank opening so that escaping fuel vapors can be immediately sucked off, or if hose is NOT available a radial fan (motor located outside airflow) with a volume of at least 9 cfm may be used.
^ Remove fuel feed hose -1- from right front fuel level sending unit -G- and connect VAG1433A fuel cart or similar approved equipment to the fuel level sending unit.
^ Connect VAG1348/3 remote switch with VAG1348/3-2 adapter to holder for fuel pump fuse # 28 -arrow-.
^ Connect test probe to battery positive voltage (B+).
^ Operate remote switch and pump fuel into fuel cart until fuel has stopped flowing.
Note:
This will only empty the fuel at the rear and in the right front sidechamber of the fuel tank.
^ Switch OFF VAG 1348/3 remote switch and remove VAG1348/3-2 adapter from fuel pump fuse holder # 28.
^ Remove test probe from battery positive voltage (B+).
^ Disconnect hose to VAG1433A fuel cart and reconnect fuel feed line to fuel sending unit.
^ Reinstall fuel pump fuse # 28 in relay panel.
^ Start and run engine for approximately 15 minutes.
Note:
The fuel from the left chamber of the fuel tank will be siphoned into the right chamber of the fuel tank.
^ Switch ignition OFF.
^ Remove fuel pump fuse # 28 from the fuse panel (left row, fifth large fuse from the top).
^ Reconnect VAG1348/3 remote switch with VAG1348/3-2 adapter to holder for fuel pump fuse # 28.
^ Reconnect test probe to battery positive voltage (B+).
^ Remove fuel feed hose -1 - from right front fuel level sending unit -G- and connect to VAG1433A fuel cart or similar approved equipment.
Note:
Fuel hose should be marked for reassembly.
^ Operate remote switch and pump fuel into fuel cart until fuel has stopped flowing.
^ Switch OFF VAG 1348/3 remote switch and remove VAG1348/3-2 adapter from fuel pump fuse holder # 28.
^ Remove test probe from battery positive voltage (B+).
^ Disconnect and remove fuel hose from VAG1433A fuel cart.
^ Obtain radio code and record radio preset stations.
^ Open hood and disconnect the ground cable (GDN) from the negative (-) battery terminal -arrow- .
^ Proceed to Section C.
