Left Flange Shaft Seal

Special tools and workshop equipment required

- Pressure Plate -VW 401-
- Pressure Plate -VW 402-
- Punch -VW 407-
- Punch -VW 412-
- Extractor Lever -VW 681-
- Driving Sleeve -32-109-
- Tube -2040-
- Assembly Drift -3384-
- Torque Wrench -V.A.G 1331-
- Torque Wrench -V.A.G 1332-
- Oil Extraction Device -V.A.G 1358 A-
- Sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-

Removing

- Observe general repair notes.

- Loosen bolt for left drive axle/wheel hub and right and left
wheel bolts only when vehicle is standing on its wheels.

- Remove front wheels.




- Remove left drive axle -1-.

- Place drip tray -V.A.G 1306- underneath.




- Unscrew sealing plug for checking transmission fluid -arrow- and
extract 0.5L axle oil from front final drive using oil extraction
unit -V.A.G 1358 A- .

Axle oil must always be extracted from front final drive because
axle oil will be mixed with ATF otherwise.

- Remove Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).

- Remove holder for connector from flange shaft mounting
bracket.




- Remove drive flange mounting bracket -arrows-.

- Pull out flange shaft.

Seal, Removing




- Remove circlip -arrow A- for grooved ball bearing.

- Press flange shaft out of flange shaft mounting bracket.

- Remove flange shaft seal using extractor lever -VW 681- .


Grooved Ball Bearing, Removing




- Press grooved ball bearing out of mounting bracket.


Grooved Ball Bearing, Installing




- Press new grooved ball bearing into mounting bracket.


Seal, Installing

- Coat outer circumference and sealing lips of sealing ring with
axle oil.




- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing
grease -G 052 128 A1- .




- Drive in new sealing ring to stop of sealing ring installer, do not distort while doing this.

Installation position:
- The followers at drive gear must engage in grooves of drive flange.




- Set drive gear for Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
on drive flange shaft.




- Press mounting bracket with grooved ball bearing onto flange shaft.




- Insert circlip -arrow A-.


Left Flange Shaft, Installing




- Replace O-ring -arrow B- in drive flange mounting bracket.




- Check drive flange for sharp edges on transmission side of
flange end and if necessary, deburr.

- Install drive flange




- Bolt on drive flange mounting bracket -arrows-.

- Install holder for connector to flange shaft mounting bracket.

- Install Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).




- Install left drive axle -1-.

- Check axle oil in front final drive with transmission installed.

- Install front wheels.
