Valve Timing, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Camshaft Clamp (T40070)

Procedure

- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Service and Repair.

- Lock the crankshaft. Refer to => [ Locking to Check/Adjust Valve Timing ] Procedures.

Setting the Valve Timing

Valve timing is correct when the bolts for the (T40070) can be installed easily into the ends of camshafts as shown. Support surfaces of the (T40070) must lie flat on the flats of the camshaft when doing this.





- If the bolts are difficult to install, position an 18 or 19 mm open end wrench - A - at the opening on the exhaust camshaft and rotate the camshaft slightly in the - direction of the arrow - to remove any play in the chain drive.

If the bolts for the (T40070) can now be installed easily with the chain drive tensioned in this manner, the valve timing is also correct. Possibly the crankshaft was not secured correctly.

Valve Timing is Not set

Valve timing is not correct when the bolts for the (T40070) cannot be installed easily into the ends of the camshafts despite the tensioned chain drive.

• In this case, the valve timing must be adjusted. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

Assembly

Assembly is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:

• Remove the (T40069) from the rear of the cylinder block and in the locking bolt. Tighten the bolt to 45 Nm.
