Carrier Assembly Reconditioning
DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER BENCH RECONDITIONINGType 1030, 1031 rear axles
Special tools: 5069, 5242
OPEN [1][2]DIFFERENTIAL
Remove differential pinion shaft
Tap out:
- Spring pin (roll pin)
- Shaft. Use brass drift.
Remove differential pinions
- Turn pinions (small gears) through a quarter turn.
- Remove gear set and washers.
LIMITED SLIP [1][2]DIFFERENTIAL
Mark [1][2]differential housing and shafts to ensure reassembly in same positions
Dismantle [1][2]differential housing.
NOTE: Bolts have left-hand threads
Clean and inspect components
- Inspect washers, plates, gears and spider for wear and cracking.
- Replace all plates and washers if any one item is damaged.
ASSEMBLY
OPEN [1][2]DIFFERENTIAL
Install [1][2]differential gears
- Install spring support washers with differential gears (large gears).
- Place gear set in position.
- Position pinions facing each other and rotate into position.
Install differential pinion shaft
- Force [1][2]differential gears (large gears) apart.
- Use puller 5069 as an expander.
- Install support washers behind pinions.
- Install shaft and remove tool.
- Install spring pin (roll pin) and lock by punching edge of hole.
LIMITED SLIP [1][2]DIFFERENTIAL
Assemble [1][2]differential brake
- Oil all components.
- Position plates and gears as illustrated.
- Install other half of [1][2]differential housing as per marking.
- Tighten bolts alternately to 60 - 70 Nm (44 - 52 ft.lb).
Toothed wheel, replacement
- Tap off toothed wheel.
- Use brass drift.
NOTE: Wheel must not be re-used.
- Press on new toothed wheel.
- Use drift 5242.
